Shawn Armstrong Landing Spot: 3 teams that could pursue veteran RHP after being DFA'd by Cubs

According to MLB insider Sahadev Sharma, the Chicago Cubs have designated Shawn Armstrong for assignment. This marks an end to a relatively short stint with the team after he was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Aug. 30 after being DFA's by the St. Louis Cardinals.

As the Chicago Cubs pushed for a playoff spot, the front opted to bring in as many proven veterans as they could in order to boost their chances. Unfortunately, things didn't work out with Shawn Armstrong. That being said, he was fine in his 7.1 innings of work, posting a 4.91 ERA in the process.

Although there is limited time left in the regular season, a contending team could look to claim Armstrong for a late-season boost. Thanks to his relatively low salary, any team that were to claim him would have to pay him less than $100,000, which could make him an intriguing addition for even an outing or two.

Here's a look at 3 potential landing spots for Shawn Armstrong after being DFA'd by the Cubs

1. Detroit Tigers

It may come as a surprise but entering Friday's action, the Detroit Tigers find themselves tied for the third and final AL WIld Card spot. The team finds itself on the verge of reaching the postseason for the first time since 2014 and adding an affordable, proven veteran could be a difference maker. It would be unsurprising to see the Tigers front office take a shot on Armstrong.

2. New York Yankees

Unlike the other teams on this list, the New York Yankees have already clinched a postseason spot, so why would they consider claiming Shawn Armstrong? Well, the addition of Armstrong could allow manager Aaron Boone to provide some of his pitching staff an additional day of rest, which could pay dividends in the postseason.

Given the struggles of some of the Yankees' reliever, Clay Holmes in particular, bringing in another veteran to help close out the year seems wise. At his price point, Shawn Armstrong could be a worthwhile add, if even for one or two outings.

3. Seattle Mariners

As of Friday, the Seattle Mariners sit 2.0 games outside of the final American League Wild Card spot. At this stage of the season, there is no reason to hold anything back, which is why they could be an interesting landing spot for Armstrong. Even if they don't reach the postseason, his afforable contract makes him worth a speculative add for the playoff hopefuls.
