The New York Yankees injury concerns continue with Ben Rortvedt the latest player ruled out for start of season
The New York Yankees had high hopes for Ben Rortvedt when they brought him over from the Minnesota Twins. The highly rated 25-year-old was expected to develop into one of the club's top catchers, but has been limited due to injuries.
Rortvedt missed a big chunk of 2022 due to surgery on his left knee. He did return for the final stretch of the season but did not play in the majors. Just as things seemed to be improving for Rortvedt, he now faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.
"To be hit by this has just been kind of blindsiding," said Rortvedt
As per a recent article in the New York Post, the young backstop will be out for at least a month, possibly longer. During spring training, the club discovered a circulation issue in his left index finger. It was later reported that Rortvedt had to undergo surgery due to an aneurysm of the posterior artery near his left shoulder.
The news is terrible timing for a player that has not played in the majors since facing the Toronto Blue Jays on September 19, 2021.

Ben Rortvedt was part of a trade with the Minnesota Twins that also brought Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Bronx. Many expected him to vie for a starting position in his first season in New York.
During his stint with the Twins, Rortvedt played 39 MLB games. He finished with a .169/.229/.281 slash line and recorded three home runs and seven RBIs over 89 at-bats.

The New York Yankees' 2022 All-Star Jose Trevino will likely start behind the plate on opening day. Veteran Kyle Higashioka, who is entering his seventh season with the organization, is another option.
The club will hope that Rortvedt's injury is not too serious and that he will only be out for a month. The news will be devastating for a player who was hoping to make a name for himself in the big leagues in 2023.
