When HOFer Derek Jeter got caught up in his emotions while delivering his heartfelt ode for New York City

New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan before he moved to New York City. Jeter was drafted by the Yankees in 1992 and the All-Star played for the team for 20 seasons.

In 2017, Jeter spoke emotionally about his lasting love for NYC after hanging up cleats.

As reported by the Players' Tribune, when penning down his gratitude for the Big Apple, Jeter said:

"Everyone comes to this city with dreams of being No. 1. You showed me that being No. 2 was more than enough.
"I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you. Because the truth is, no matter where you go in the world, when a place feels like home, as New York does to me, you never really leave. It will always be with you."

In 1996, Jeter took over as the team's starting shortstop. He later won the Rookie of the Year Award after assisting the "Bronx Bombers" in their 1996 World Series victory over the Atlanta Braves.

After winning a World Series in his second season, Jeter was overjoyed by the celebration and could sense New York City's devotion to the Yankees. Jeter expressed his happiness and said:

“I’m still dreaming. The way New York has embraced us after the championship, I can’t put it into words.
"I hope we can do it a few more years. … There’s nothing else I’d rather do than win some more.”

From 1998 through 2000, Jeter continued to play with distinction.
