When Ken Griffey Jr.'s heartfelt tribute to teammate Jay Buhner reduced his beloved friend to tears
Jay Buhner and Ken Griffey Jr. were teammates for the Seattle Mariners for several years. They also became neighbors, which only strengthened what many considered a very unlikely friendship.
Back in 2016, Griffey Jr. was inducted into the Hall of Fame. His tribute to Buhner at the time reduced his friend to tears.
Referring to Buhner as a "brother from another mother", Griffey Jr. said:
“Of all people that I would consider my brother, from another mother, a guy who listens to country music, wears cowboy boots, big belt buckles. I got 17 speakers in the car, sweat suits, rap music. Two people that are so far apart on every level became really close. And I don’t know if that’s the position changes that we had. I went over to right field, he came over."
He further said:
"But, there was no other person in this world, other than my parents, that if something ever happened to me, my wife, that I would want to raise my kids.”
Ken Griffey Jr. is an MLB legend
Ken Griffey Jr. was viewed as a terrific player from the moment the Seattle Mariners selected him with the first overall pick in the 1987 draft.
