Yankees vs. Cardinals: Game 3 predictions, odds and picks — Sept 1, MLB 2024

The New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals head into Sunday's third game with the series on the line after the latter bounced back to win a see-saw encounter on Saturday. Manager Aaron Boone's team will be looking to avoid defeat as it has a slender lead at the top of the AL East standings.

St. Louis became the final team in the MLB to get a win at the Yankee Stadium after they won 6-5. They almost blew their five-run lead in the eighth inning. Anthony Volpe had left off with an RBI single before Giancarlo Stanton just fell short of a grand slam with a three-run triple. The Cards were able to close out in the ninth for the win.

Yankees vs. Cardinals: Game 3 Prediction

The two teams have pitched decently in this series, and Sunday's game is expected to be another tough encounter between both pitching staffs. Miles Mikolas (8-10, 5.23 ERA) starts on the mound for the Cardinals. Even though Mikolas' overall stat line is concerning, on the road the Cards pitcher has a 7-5 record and a 4.54 ERA.

On the other side of the duel will be the red-hot, in-form Nestor Cortes Jr. After suffering a stretch of bad starts that dropped him to a 5-10 record and a 4.42 ERA, Cortes is 3-0 over his last three starts and has earned just one run, a solo home run in his last start against the Washington Nationals.

St. Louis has a healthy .266 batting average in its last 10 games and will rely on Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson to come strong. Meanwhile, the Yanks will look toward their captain Aaron Judge to start the month of September in style.
