3 basketball teams that play at the Greensboro Coliseum, featuring Greensboro Swarm, and more
The Greensboro Coliseum is a sports and entertainment complex that can hold up to 20,000 people in North Carolina. It opened in 1959 and has hosted a number of sporting events, conferences and concerts over the years as well as becoming the home court for numerous college and professional sports teams.
In total, 13 different teams have made it their home stadium with sports ranging from basketball to hockey to arena football. The venue is also home to the ACC Tournament, hosting it 27 times over the years, as well as hosting the NCAA Final Four in 1974. In addition, it has regularly hosted games during the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
There are currently three teams that call the venue their full-time home: the Greensboro Swarm, the Carolina Cobras and the UNC Greensboro Spartans.
Teams that call the Greensboro Coliseum home:
#1, UNC Greensboro Spartans
The longest-tenured team to be hosted by the Greensboro Coliseum, the UNC Greensboro basketball team has been playing there since 2010. The Spartans compete in the Southern Conference in Division I.
They moved to the stadium after their on-campus facility, Fleming Gymnasium, regularly filled up for games. UNC Greensboro (20-12, 14-4 SoCon) had an impressive season before suffering a 67-66 loss to Wofford in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game to end their season.
#2, Carolina Cobras
Established in 2018, the Carolina Cobras compete in the National Arena League and are one of seven teams in this arena football league. They are the third indoor or arena football team to call the Greensboro Coliseum home.
The Cobras have used the facility as their home field for all five of their seasons. They lost in the NAL championship game this year and have been to the championship game three times, including one win, during their existence.
#3, Greensboro Swarm
The G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, the Greensboro Swarm, is likely the most well-known inhabitant of the arena. They were founded in 2016 and have played their home games there since their origin. The Swarm was the 11th developmental team to be owned by an NBA team.
This season's roster holds notable talents such as LiAngelo Ball, Theo Maledon and James Bouknight. The Swarm are just 8-17 this season.
While it may not have the top-end teams that some larger arenas hold, the Greensboro Coliseum is a notable hub for sports in the city. Expect it to continue to be active in hosting some of the most impressive sporting events, concerts and conferences in the North Carolina area moving forward.
