3 trades LA Lakers could make to improve their roster before NBA trade deadline
The LA Lakers have 42 games left to secure a playoff spot this season. They're currently the 12th seed and have a record of 19-21. However, LA is on a five-game winning streak and off to a great start in the New Year. Considering the same, fans' hopes of the Lakers contending in the playoffs are returning.
LeBron James is carrying the load for the Purple and Gold at the moment while Anthony Davis remains out indefinitely. Complementing the "King" are guys like Russell Westbrook, Dennis Schroder, and Thomas Bryant. Unfortunately, James' supporting cast can be inconsistent, which is why the Lakers aren't quite in a position where they'd like to be.
The best solution for the Lakers would be to secure players who can help the team win. So, who would a perfect fit for the squad?
Trades that could take LA Lakers to playoffs
Here's a look at three such trades the Lakers could make before the trade deadline on February 9:
#1 Kyrie Irving for Russell Westbrook
According to previous reports, Kyrie Irving has always been a target for the LA Lakers. There was even a time when LA fans believed Irving would sign with the team. That hasn't yet materialized, and the superstar point guard has re-signed with the Brooklyn Nets, but that doesn't mean it's no longer a possibility.
The Lakers should at least trade Russell Westbrook for a better point guard if they still want to move him. It just so happens that Irving meets that criteria. Even at the age of 30, "Uncle Drew" is still at the top of his game.
He's statistically playing better than Westbrook and has good chemistry with his former co-champion LeBron James.
#2 Draymond Green for a few role players
Draymond Green has been making subtle hints about working with LeBron James and the LA Lakers for some time. According to numerous sources, Green has even stated out loud that he wishes to play alongside the "King."
The Lakers currently lack consistent defense. While LA has proven to be strong in the defensive area, consistency would be key to their success. Draymond Green may no longer be young, but he can still deliver at the defensive end.
#3 DeMar DeRozan for Russell Westbrook
It was widely believed that DeMar DeRozan would be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers last season before he signed with the Chicago Bulls. The Lakers apparently had others ideas and chose to go with Russell Westbrook instead. However, that doesn't rule out the possibility of seeing DeRozan wear the Purple and Gold uniform.
While LeBron James is still strong and healthy, the LA Lakers are contemplating their options for competing for the championship. The Lakers reportedly want to trade for Bradley Beal, according to speculations. The next best move would be a deal for DeRozan if the franchise is interested in acquiring a shooting guard anyway.
