The Los Angeles Lakers have a big fan base all across the globe. The reason for this has been their on-court performance with 16 NBA championships and acquirement of players who later became Hall of Famers. Some of the greats to have played for Lakers are- Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

There are certain facts about this great franchise, which most fans are not aware of, here are five of them:

Lakers was initially based in Minneapolis before making a switch to Los Angeles in 1960. The word 'Lakers' for the franchise was coined from Minnesota's nickname "Land of 10,000 lakes". Once the franchise changed cities, the ownership decided against changing the name and word Lakers stuck with the team.
