Are the Sixers bringing back their iconic black jerseys next season? Exploring possibility after Tyrese Maxey’s tribute video drops hints

On Sunday, the Philadelphia 76ers released a video to honor Tyrese Maxey, which showed the guard donning a classic black 76ers jersey. The tribute video has Philadelphia fans giddy at the idea of possibly bringing back the sleek all-black look.

After an active offseason that saw the 76ers add some key pieces, Sixers fans have plenty to be optimistic about. The organization may have given its loyal fanbase one more piece of good news with the jersey likely to come back next season.

A social media post from Sixers beat writer Adam Aaronson added fuel to the rumors that the jersey is coming back with the caption stating:

"Seems like it's happening"

The social media post has been doing the rounds and fans have responded positively to it.

The 76ers started strong last season before an injury to Joel Embiid hampered their season. The team fell short of an Eastern Conference finals appearance but with Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and the recently added Paul George set to return next season, expectations are high.

The Sixers black jersey was made famous by shooting guard Allen Iverson who led the team to the 2001 NBA finals. That team eventually fell short against a Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant led LA Lakers side, but Iverson's performances during the five games were heralded as some of the greatest in finals history.

The 76ers wore the black jersey during Game 1 of the 2001 championship at the then Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Lakers entered the game as defending champions and had remained undefeated throughout the playoffs, sweeping every team along the way. A valiant 48 points from Iverson guided the Sixers to an extraordinary upset that will be remembered by Philadelphia fans for decades to come.

For 76ers fans, that 2000/2001 season will go down as one of the greatest in franchise history. It was also the last time the organization reached the NBA finals.

Fans will be hoping this team can build a new era of success under Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George. If the team does bring back the loveable black Sixers jersey, it can only add to the excitement surrounding the franchise.
