Bob Myers on accused 2019 rape charges on Anthony Lamb: "If there's an ongoing investigation, we would not have moved forward"
Golden State Warriors forward Anthony Lamb has been accused of raping his ex-girlfriend in 2019. While a civil lawsuit has been filed against the University of Vermont, Lamb's alma mater, where the alleged attack occurred, no charges have been brought against the third-year player.
Warriors general manager Bob Myers addressed the accusations upon signing Lamb in October, stating:
"We checked with the NBA, we checked with the two teams that had prior signed him and didn't hear anything as far as official charges or anything like that. It's tough because we take that very seriously."
Myers would note that Lamb has not been criminally charged or convicted, adding:
"At the same time, it’s difficult because if someone’s accused of something but not charged or convicted, and we then deny them an opportunity, is that fair, too? Again, that’s something we take very seriously. We can only, at times, look at what the law has done and also follow the leadership of the NBA."
Finally, he shared
"If the NBA had said, this is not something we would recommend, or do, or if there’s an ongoing investigation, we would have not moved forward. They have more information than we do in this situation and we had to lean on that. We had to lean on the prior teams that signed him. Our general counsel looked into it themselves. We didn’t do it lightly.”
While the accusations were first made in 2021, Lamb is yet to be criminally charged. It remains to be seen if the recent civil lawsuit filed against the University of Vermont will have any bearing on any potential charges or on his NBA career.
