Doc Rivers joins Clippers as new coach

Gelnn “Doc” Rivers will join the L.A Clippers as their new coach.

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles have completed a deal Tuesday which will see Glenn “Doc” Rivers become the head coach of the Clippers in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 draft.

The 51-year-old Rivers will also take on the title of vice president of basketball operations for the Clippers who decided to not offer a new contract to coach Vinny Del Negro.

The Clippers did not release details of the contract but the American media reported the deal was for three years and worth $21 million.

The Clippers are expected to formally introduce Rivers at a news conference on Wednesday.

Rivers played for the Clippers during the 1991-92 season but he was best known as a standout with the Atlanta Hawks.

Rivers served as Boston’s head coach since 2004 and guided the franchise to the 2008 NBA title. He compiled a 416-305 win-loss record and 59-47 playoff mark.
