About FIBA World Cup

The FIBA Worldcup is a basketball competition that was founded by the International Basketball Federation. This event was initially known as the FIBA World Championship from its starting in 1950 until 2010. After that, it got here to be called the FIBA World Cup.

The first FIBA World Cup was held in Argentina in 1950. This country was chosen as the venue because it was the only country prepared to host it. Argentina won all of the games and has become the primary FIBA World Champion. After this tournament, the next five tournaments were scheduled in South America. During this time, the basketball teams from America dominated and won eight of the nine medals in the first three tournaments.

Between the time period of 1963 and 1990, the US, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union and Brazil together gained each medal at the tournament. Later, the 1994 FIBA World Championship was held in Toronto. This year was marked as the beginning of the new era as before this only European and South American professionals were allowed to play in the championship. But, now all the NBA players from America played in the 1994 FIBA World Championship. Thereafter, the 1998 FIBA World Cup Championship took place in Greece. In this tournament, the Yugoslavian team won the gold medal.

Since 1998, the winners of the match had been honoured with the brand new Naismith Trophy, named after the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith. In 2002, Yugoslavia was the World Champion after they won the final games against Argentina. During this championship, Dirk Nowitzki was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The Turkey men’s basketball team was defeated by the USA in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. After the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the FIBA made some significant changes to the structure of the FIBA World Cup Championship. The team size in the final competition was expanded from 24 to 32. Another change was that the tournament would no longer overlap with the FIFA World Cup. These changes were successfully applied in the 2019 edition in China.
