Jayson Tatum will not spend any of his new $314 million contract

After leading the Boston Celtics to their 18th NBA title in the 2023-24 season, Jayson Tatum renewed his contract with the franchise earlier this week for a record $314 million supermax agreement over five years. With the deal, Tatum signed the richest contract in NBA history, overtaking his teammate Jaylen Brown's five-year, $285 million contract that he signed last year.

However, Tatum will not be spending anything from his Celtics contract given a longstanding agreement with his mom Brandy Cole. During an interview with Graham Bensinger last year, the five-time NBA All-Star elaborated on his agreement with his mom, who also manages his finances, that he will only spend the money he earns from endorsements.

“Her and my accountant agreed,” Tatum said of the deal the mother-son duo made before he was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2017. “They didn’t know I’d make as much as I did off the court.”

Jayson Tatum and his mom said that they are careful about preserving his basketball earnings, citing the financial insecurities they faced before Tatum entered the NBA.

“For most of my life I didn’t have money,” Tatum said. “I didn’t have an investment account, checking account, a credit card. I remember what it’s like to struggle and not have.”

Though he leaves his basketball contract money untouched, the Boston Celtics star does give himself flexibility to have fun, given that he sticks to the terms of the deal. According to Forbes, Tatum brought in an estimated $13 million from endorsements in 2024 from sponsors including Nike, Gatorade, Google and Subway.
