Butler was drafted by the Chicago Bulls as the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. After receiving the 2015 NBA Most Improved Player award, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2017. He moved to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018 before playing for the Miami Heat from 2019 to 2025.
