LeBron James didn't want the Cavs to comply with Kyrie Irving's trade request

Ky
Kyrie Irving and LeBron James have met twice this season, splitting the two games.

What's the story?

ESPN's Brian Windhorst is reporting that LeBron James tried to get the management of the Cleveland Cavaliers to not comply with Kyrie Irving's trade request.

In case you didn't know

On 22 August 2017, the Cavaliers traded Irving to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zicic, the rights to the 2018 first round pick that was originally obtained from the Brooklyn Nets, and a second-round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The heart of the matter...

LeBron wanted to work out any issues there were with Irving and try to contend for more championships, but Irving's mind was set and he met with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert this past July about his concerns.

Irving wanted out of Cleveland so he could get out of LeBron James' shadow and make a mark on his own. He's definitely done that with the Boston Celtics as they hold the best record in the Eastern Conference at 34-11, even after losing their newly recruited All-Star Gordon Hayward in the first game of the season to injury.

Windhorst also mentioned that Cleveland was initially excited about the trade, but due to their recent struggles, they're starting to second guess the deal.

What's next?

The Boston Celtics (34-11) continue to lead the Eastern Conference and will take on the Philadelphia 76ers (20-20) next on Thursday evening. This game will air nationally on TNT.

The Cleveland Cavaliers (26-17) have been struggling as of late with a 2-8 record in their last 10 games and look to get a win on Thursday against one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference in the Orlando Magic (13-31).

Author's take

I don't blame LeBron for trying to keep his superstar teammate as they would've competed together for more titles for LeBron's hometown team. But judging by the standings, I am pretty sure Irving feels good about his decision.
