Report: San Antonio Spurs' plan on "high priority" offseason meeting with Kawhi Leonard
What's the story?
ESPN's Michael C. Wright is reporting that the San Antonio Spurs are planning on a meeting in the offseason with their superstar forward Kawhi Leonard to determine his future with the organization on a long-term basis.
In case you didn't know...
Further evidence of a rift between Leonard and the Spurs was when Kawhi Leonard decided to rehab with his own trainers and doctors instead of using the team's doctors and trainers. Leonard only played nine games in the 2017-18 season and his last game came on January 13th against the Denver Nuggets.
The heart of the matter...
The term that Wright used in regards to the upcoming offseason meeting with the Spurs and Leonard is "all hands on deck." Wright also stated that the meeting with Leonard will be a "high priority" now that their season is finished.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will initiate the talks, much like he did with a disgruntled LaMarcus Aldridge, last offseason.
Leonard is going into next season on the final guaranteed year of his contract and has a player option for the 2019-20 season. The Spurs are going to try to work out a supermax deal with Leonard that would be in the range of six years and $219 million.
What's next?
Unfortunately for the Spurs, the offseason is now as they lost in the first round of the NBA Playoffs to the Golden State Warriors in five games with the final nail in the coffin coming on Tuesday in a 99-91 loss. Stay tuned to Sportskeeda for the latest on this ongoing saga between Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs.
Author's take...
Outside of wondering where LeBron James will go in the offseason, this is one of the more interesting stories in the summer. The Spurs are such a well-run organization to where you believe that the odds are in favor of Leonard signing a long-term supermax deal; however, this has been a very strange season between the two parties.
