First started in 1994 as the Rookie Challenge, this event of the All-Star weekend underwent several name changes before adopting the current title of the Rising Stars Challenge in 2012. Initially featuring "Rookies vs Sophomore" matchups, it transitioned to "Team World vs. Team USA" games from 2015 to 2021. Since 2022, it has embraced a four-team tournament format. In this revamped format, the NBA handpicks the top 28 emerging young talents from the NBA, comprising rookies and sophomores.
Typically held as a prime-time event on Friday night during the NBA All-Star Weekend, the Rising Stars Challenge puts the spotlight on the league's most promising rookies and sophomores. This exhibition game provides a platform for these budding stars to showcase their skills and potential on a grand stage. While the format has evolved, its essence remains unchanged – an electrifying showcase of athleticism, youthful talent, and future greatness. Many great players such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, etc. have participated in this event.

2024 Panini Rising Stars Challenge Teams
For the third consecutive season, the Rising Stars contest hosted a mini-tournament consisting of four teams made up of NBA rookies, sophomores, and NBA G League Players.
Basketball Hall of Famers Pau Gasol and Tamika Catchings, and ex-NBA player turned popular media personality Jalen Rose were selected to coach "Team Pau", "Team Tamika", and "Team Jalen" respectively. All three of them selected their teams through the "Rising Stars Draft" live, on the NBA App on February 6th. German Basketball legend Detlef Schrempf was selected to coach the fourth team, "Team Detlef" comprised of NBA G League players.
The Rising Stars Challenge was completed in a competition of three games. All three games in the mini-tournament had a Final Target Score, meaning each game would be concluded with a made basket or free throw rather than running out of time. The two semifinal matches, Game 1 and Game 2 were played until a Final Target Score of 40 was reached, and the championship game, featuring the winners of the semifinals, was played until a Final Target Score of 25 was achieved.
In the fun-filled Rising Stars draft, "Team Pau", led by Pau Gasol, selected Victor Wembanyama as their top pick. Then "Team Tamika", guided by Tamika Catchings, followed suit by drafting reigning "2022 Rookie of the Year" Paolo Banchero as the second overall pick. Meanwhile, Team Jalen, under the leadership of Jalen Rose, chose Chet Holmgren as round 1 of the draft concluded.

2024 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game
Since its inception in 1951, the NBA All-Star Weekend has evolved to include various other activities aimed at enriching the overall experience. Among the more recent additions to the festivities is the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, which made its debut in 2003. This lively affair kicks off the All-Star Weekend on Friday, featuring teams comprised of celebrities from diverse backgrounds, including the entertainment industry, retired NBA players, and occasionally current WNBA athletes.
Now firmly established as a marquee event of the NBA All-Star Weekend, the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game offers a delightful mix of entertainment and basketball prowess, often introducing unique rule variations to spice up the action. For instance, quarters in this game adhere to FIBA rules, lasting 10 minutes instead of the standard 12-minute NBA quarters. Additionally, in 2019, a distinctive 4-point decal was introduced, setting a line a yard behind the 3-point line, thereby encouraging ambitious long-range shots from the celebrities.
Over the years, the Celebrity Game has boasted an impressive roster of diverse celebrities, infusing the event with star power from various fields. From the inaugural All-Star Celebrity game in 2003, featuring likes of Justin Timberlake and Jamie Foxx, to subsequent editions showcasing the basketball skills of renowned personalities such as Kevin Hart, Nick Cannon, Chris Tucker, WNBA players like Sue Bird and Rebecca Lobo, or NBA legends like Moses Malone and Spud Webb, as well as international celebrities such as Ranveer Singh.
The 2024 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game featured popular figures such as Jennifer Hudson, Metta World Peace, Micah Parsons, Gianmarco Tamberi, Lilly Singh, and CJ Stroud, alongside WNBA stars Jewell Loyd and Natasha Cloud.
The 2024 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game teams were coached by renowned sports personalities Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe, with support from NFL legend Peyton Manning, Hip-Hop icons Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Lil Wayne, WNBA superstar A’ja Wilson, and comedian Lil Wayne. In addition to the star-studded lineup, the 2024 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game also featured a brand-new LED court, complete with innovative features like a moving three-point line and captivating graphics.
In the 2024 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, Team Shannon defeated Team Stephen A. with a 100-91 scoreline. The game was highlighted by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons' dominant performance as he scored an incredible 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds en route to earning MVP honors.
The game was played on a stunning court illuminated by 25 million LEDs, providing a thrilling showcase of talent from both the entertainment and sports worlds. Team Shannon's victory was sealed with crucial contributions from Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua, who added 16 points to the scoreboard. When the game was tied at 78-78 in the final minutes of the game, Team Shannon scored on back-to-back 4-point shots from Nacua and actor Dylan Wang which helped them to get a decisive lead.
Throughout the matchup, Parsons and Nacua showcased their athleticism and skill, dazzling fans with monstrous dunks and aggressive drives to the basket. Despite the efforts of Team Stephen A, led by Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, content creator Tristan Jass, and Olympic high jump gold medalist Gianmarco Tamberi, they could not contain Parsons and Nacua's offensive onslaught.
Off the court, ESPN personalities Stephen A. Smith and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe served as coaches for their respective teams, adding an extra layer of excitement to the game. First, the NBA All-Star Practice was held in the morning, offering fans a chance to witness their favorite star players in action. This was followed by the HBCU Classic, featuring the clash between Winston-Salem State and Virginia Union at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and following that, the State Farm All-Star Saturday Night started in Lucas Oil Stadium featuring the Kia Skills Challenge, Starry 3-Point Contest, and the AT&T Slam Dunk competition.
Kia Skills Challenge
The 2024 NBA All-Star Kia Skills Challenge featured three teams of three players each who battled it out in three exciting rounds.
First up, we had Team Pacers, representing the home team with popular players Tyrese Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, and Myles Turner. They were playing in front of their hometown fans in Indianapolis. It's a tradition for the host city's NBA team to participate in this challenge.
Next up came the Team Top Picks, featuring three rising stars who were top picks in their respective drafts: 2021 NBA draft top pick Anthony Edwards from the Minnesota Timberwolves, 2022's "Rookie of the Year" Paolo Banchero from the Orlando Magic, and French phenom Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs who was selected first overall in 2023. These young stars are hailed as the future superstars of the NBA who will carry the hopes of their franchise for years to come.
And rounding out the competition was Team All-Stars, comprised of three young All-Stars from the Eastern Conference: Scottie Barnes from the Toronto Raptors, Tyrese Maxey from the Philadelphia 76ers, and Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks. All three are young franchise cornerstones for their respective teams.
For the third consecutive year, the trend of the home team winning continued at the 2024 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge as Team Pacers, consisting of Tyrese Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, and Myles Turner, secured the championship in this team event, following in the footsteps of previous home team winners, the Cleveland Cavaliers (2022) and Utah Jazz (2023).
The contest was decided once again in a tie-breaker round featuring a half-court shot. The team Pacers clinched victory by outperforming the team All-Stars. Despite the team All-Stars setting the pace early, the team Pacers surpassed their time by over 20 seconds, with Tyrese Haliburton sealing the win with a flawless half-court shot.
Earlier, the competition witnessed intense relay races, with the Pacers impressively completing the three-man relay in 1:07, setting the tone for their eventual triumph. Although the All-Stars initially seemed formidable, their errors such as Barnes' fumble and Maxey's misdirection hindered their performance. Additionally, Team Top Picks, featuring Paolo Banchero, Anthony Edwards, and Victor Wembanyama, fell short as Ant-Man Edwards struggled with his corner 3-point attempts.
The passing round proved equally close as Team All-Stars and the Pacers showcased remarkable skills. After tying with 74 points each, the tie-breaker ensued. Despite the All-Stars setting a new record with 90 points, the Pacers exceeded expectations by scoring 92 points. Team Pacers' strategic approach of alternating between the four and six-point goals turned out to be a masterstroke.
Overall, the Kia Skills Challenge at the 2024 State Farm All-Star Saturday Night captivated audiences with its thrilling displays of athleticism and teamwork, ultimately culminating in another triumph for the home team, Team Pacers.
NBA 3-Point Contest
Introduced in 1986, the Three-Point Contest has become a cornerstone of the NBA All-Star Weekend. Held on Saturday night, the NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest features the NBA's deadliest 3-point shooters competing against each other in a shootout.
The NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest consists of multiple rounds where participants shoot from five different predetermined locations around the three-point arc. Each location has a rack of five basketballs, with four regular balls worth one point each and one multicolored "money ball" worth two points. The 3-point shooter has one minute to attempt as many shots as they can, moving through each of the five locations and a total of 30 basketballs placed on the arc. The contestant with the highest score advances to the next round, where they compete against other shooters in the same manner. This process continues until a winner is determined, who is crowned the NBA 3-Point Contest champion for that year.
The NBA All-Star 3 Point Contest not only showcases the sharpshooting abilities of the NBA's elite but also adds an exciting element to the All-Star Weekend festivities, attracting fans with intense competition and impressive shooting displays. The 3 Point Contest features the best 3-point shooters from the NBA who race against the clock to sink as many three-pointers as possible from various positions around the arc and beat their contestants.
In recent years, the NBA 3-Point Contest has surged in popularity due to the emergence of legendary shooters, who have redefined the game with their unparalleled 3-point accuracy. Players like Steph Curry, Damian Lillard, James Harden, and Klay Thompson have elevated the art of 3-point shooting to new heights. As these elite marksmen vie for the prestigious trophy, the NBA 3 Point Contest serves as a testament to the evolution of the game, showcasing the remarkable talents that have shaped modern basketball.
2024 NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest
The 2024 NBA All-Star 3-point contest featured some of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA. The 2023's 3-Point Contest champ Damian Lillard came back to defend his title, and following him was his Bucks teammate Malik Beasley, who entered the contest with the highest 3-point shooting percentage for the 2023/24 season. Also vying for the crown was Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton, who has the home-court advantage. Then there's Karl-Anthony Towns, who made history as the first center to win the 3-point contest back in 2022.
Completing the roster were sharpshooters Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz, left-handed floater machine Jalen Brunson representing the New York Knicks, Hawks' sensational playmaker Trae Young, and the prolific 3-point scorer Donovan Mitchell, who was hoping to capture his first 3-point title, and become first ever NBA player in history to win both Slam Dunk contest and 3-point contest.
Damian Lillard showed off his tremendous shooting skills once again by winning his second straight NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest. In the final round, he faced tough competition from Karl-Anthony Towns and Trae Young. At first, Dame was behind, but then he made an incredible comeback by sinking four shots in a row second-to-last trey.
Lillard then again struggled a bit on his last rack but managed to make the winning shot just in time. This win made Lillard the first person to win the contest two years in a row since Jason Kapono did it in 2007 and 2008. Fans were amazed by Lillard's performance, proving he's one of the best shooters in the league.
Stephen vs Sabrina: 3-Point Challenge
One of the most exciting events of the Starry 2024 NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest featured WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu, renowned for her exceptional 3-point shooting in the women's game, who competed against the sharpshooting legend Steph Curry.
Sabrina Ionescu started the challenge with a bang, making seven shots in a row and finishing with an impressive score of 26. This matched the highest score of any NBA player earlier in the 3-point contest.
But it was the legendary Steph Curry who ended up winning the friendly competition between the two friends. Even though he was six points behind going into the final rack of all-money balls, Curry stayed calm and made the last four shots to secure the victory. The exciting showdown between Curry and Ionescu was one of the highlights of the night in Indianapolis. The audience viewership peaked during this event suggesting that this event was a massive success.
After the contest, Curry and Ionescu talked about the possibility of competing against each other again and even teaming up with other players. Contestants typically have a set number of attempts to complete their dunk, with a limited time frame to execute their moves. The dunks can range from simple yet powerful slams to intricate and acrobatic maneuvers involving spins, twists, and even props. The goal is to impress the judges and spectators with the degree of difficulty, style, and execution of each dunk.
The NBA Slam Dunk Contest judges give their score out of 10 for each dunk based on various factors such as creativity, athleticism, originality, and presentation. This judging is typically conducted by a panel of former NBA stars, basketball luminaries, and occasionally celebrity guests, adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings. The contestant with the highest combined score from the judges advances to the next round or ultimately wins the Slam Dunk contest.
The Slam Dunk Contest often serves as a platform for players to leave their mark on basketball history with iconic performances that are replayed and celebrated for years to come. It's a thrilling showcase of athleticism and creativity that captivates fans worldwide and adds excitement to the NBA's All-Star Weekend festivities.

2024 AT&T Slam Dunk Contest

Then there was Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics who was the first All-Star to grace the dunk contest after 7 years. Lastly, we had got two rookies Jacob Toppin of the New York Knicks and Miami Heat's rookie sensation Jaime Jaquez Jr.
The 2024 NBA All-Star Dunk Contest was again highlighted by Mac McClung as he pulled off an impressive reverse dunk over NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal to win the contest for the second year in a row. Many started calling that dunk - "Mac-a-Shaq".
The runner-up was Jaylen Brown, who paid tribute to Terrance Clarke by wearing his high school jersey. Clarke, a talented 19-year-old from Boston, tragically died in a car accident three months before the 2021 draft. Despite his passing, Clarke was still drafted by the league in the first round.
Unfortunately, Jaime Jaquez of the Heat and Jacob Toppin of the Westchester Knicks G-League team were eliminated in the first round.
McClung's victory made him the first player since Zach LaVine in 2015-16 to win the contest two years in a row. When asked if he'll go for a third win, McClung didn't make any promises but expressed his gratitude for being part of the event, saying, "I would never say never. It's an honor to be here."
