NBA analyst attributes New Orleans Pelicans’ defense as game changer: “You know how hard it is to get professionals to play defense”
The New Orleans Pelicans are having an incredible season and currently sit atop the Western Conference standings. NBA analyst Chiny Ogwumike has credited their recent success to their commitment to playing defense.
In what has been an unmitigated unpredictable Western Conference, the Pelicans now have the best record. They are enjoying a five-game winning streak and have lost only eight games in 24 outings.
Coming into the season, the Pelicans were underrated even as a few suggested that they could pose a threat this season. Zion Williamson's return was undoubtedly going to be a huge boost, and the Duke product has lived up to expectations.
With the Pelicans topping the Western Conference standings at this stage of the season for the first time since 2008, many wonder what the reason for their success is. On "NBA Today," Ogwumike highlighted that their great form is centered around their willingness to play defense.
"It's all about defense. Their defense has really turned up, especially in this five-game win streak. Tied for first in defensive efficiency, second in steals, third in opponent field goal percentage, and fourth in blocks.
"We talk about their offense and those additions, and how many great role players have stepped up and continued to develop getting Zion back. You know how hard it is to get professionals to play defense? If you're able to do that, that to me is a sign of a team moving in a different direction."
By the numbers, the New Orleans Pelicans are playing better defense. They are ranked third in defensive rating and have allowed only 109.8 points per game (sixth in the league).
In the past, the Pelicans have been criticized for their poor defense. With all players buying in, they have improved tremendously in that regard.

Larry Nance Jr. highlights Zion Williamson's leadership for New Orleans Pelicans' success
Although the New Orleans Pelicans were expected to qualify for the playoffs this season, no one imagined they would be topping the West. The young team has been getting it done on both ends of the floor and is reaping the benefits.
Pelicans forward Larry Nance Jr. was asked about the team's newfound form. He attributed their success to improved defense and Williamson's leadership.
"I think defensively. That's kind of the obvious answer, isn't it? We really amped up the intensity, guys have really bought in on what we have to do on that end."
When asked why he believes the team has been great on the defensive end of the floor, he said:
"Guys have bought in. From one to 15. Z (Zion( has been highlighted recently and he deserves it. He deserves the praise he's been getting on both ends. ... If Z is playing defense and scoring 30 how are the rest of us not gonna buy in on that end?"
The New Orleans Pelicans will square off against the Phoenix Suns in their next outing. A win against the Suns will give them some separation against the No. 2 placed team in the conference.
