"7’4 slenderman doing behind the back cheese" - NBA fans go wild over Victor Wembanyama linking up with Jamal Crawford in offseason
Victor Wembanyama was as good as advertised in his first season in the professional ranks. Touted as one of the most hyped rookies ever, Wembanyama became one of the NBA's fastest-rising superstars, bringing more eyes to the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs as the Rookie of the Year.
Wembanyama almost showcased it all, often leaving fans in awe with his footwork, speed, shooting and insane physical tools predicated on his 7-foot-4 frame and 8-foot wingspan.
Looking to expand his skillset for his sophomore season, Wembanyama turned to NBA legend and former three-time Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford to equip himself with a deeper offensive bag.
While there's no news detailing what happened during their sessions, Crawford, who is known for his isolation game and exciting handles, is expected to tap on Wemby’s already-solid dribbling skills in their workouts.
Thinking of Wembanyama's potential when equipped with Crawford's offensive talents, some fans talked about how Wemby could dominate the league in the future, especially if he puts to use whatever he will pick up with his workouts with NBA legends in the offseason.
“7’4 slenderman doing jamal behind the back cheese. League is cooked,” one fan tweeted.
“Wemby with Jamal’s handles would break the league,” another fan reacted.
“Wemby with elite handles the league is finished,” a fan posted.
Other fans hope to see these workouts translate to the court in the coming season as Wemby aims to steer the Spurs to their first playoff appearance since 2019.
“If he develops just a little bit of that handle we’re all cooked,” one fan tweeted.
“If he develops just a little bit of that handle we’re all cooked,” another fan wrote.
“Oh my goodness Wemby with Crawford’s bag would be unstoppable,” a fan posted.
Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game in his first season in the league, also finishing second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Jamal Crawford says he would build around Victor Wembanyama over anyone else
In February, Jamal Crawford heaped praise on Wembanyama’s potential, detailing why he would choose the Spurs star over anyone in the league if he is to build a team from scratch.
"If it was three years then it's the Joker (Nikola Jokic) or it's, like, (Joel) Embiid. But if it's 507 years, it's Victor Wembanyama for sure," Crawford said on "The Draymond Green Show" podcast.
In the same episode, Crawford called Wemby a “game-changer” and commended his work ethic to maintain his talents and maximize his skill sets. He then applauded his body of work as he avoided injuries in his first season, debunking concerns about his lanky frame.
Wembanyama almost made the All-Star team in his rookie season, finishing eighth in the Western Conference’s frontcourt. With his current career trajectory, Wemby could be an All-Star as soon as next year.
