"A lot of feelings and emotions right now": Overwhelmed Zaccharie Risacher delighted after Hawks select him No. 1

Zaccharie Risacher was an emotional rookie after being selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. The French phenom, known for his intersection of size, athleticism and defense along with streaky shooting saw him go to Atlanta, which could use help in all of the departments.

On his part, the 19-year-old forward could be seen overwhelmed with emotion when he was interviewed after being picked by the Hawks.

Risacher, wearing a Hawks snapback cap and sporting a grey suit, told ESPN:

"It's a blessing, you know? So exciting. There are a lot of feelings and emotions right now. I don't know what to say, but this is definitely special. ... So blessed. My family is here. This is amazing."

Risacher was hot for the JL Bourg earlier this season. With Saddiq Bey as a free agent and De'Andre Hunter as a trade market commodity, the Hawks will likely pair the rookie and Jalen Johnson as their frontcourt if Risacher manages to make an impact.

Risacher was expected to be a perfect fit for the San Antonio Spurs with Victor Wembanyama. However, with him off the board, San Antonio drafted Connecticut guard/wing Stephon Castle at No. 4. Now, Risacher has a chance to prove his mettle as he suits up for the Hawks.

Zaccharie Risacher's playmaking adds to his advantage

At 6-foot-10 and 210 pounds, Zaccharie Risacher comes in with the ideal small forward frame, and his length, coupled with defensive versatility, makes him a lethal wing the Hawks have at their disposal. He was listed as one of those players who could be more than just a pull-up or a catch-and-shoot threat as he demonstrated key playmaking skills when his offense took a hit.

Risacher comes in with a decorated resume. He is the LNB Élite champion and a Leaders Cup winner in 2024. The rookie was also named the LNB Élite Best Young Player as well as being the recipient of the 2024 EuroCup Rising Star award. He was also in play at the LNB All-Star and the Nike Hoop Summit last year.
