After 13 years with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson labels pick-and-roll game with Luka Doncic 'the best' he's ever seen
Dallas Mavericks forward Klay Thompson is feeling optimistic with his new team. Although he hasn't played an official game with his new teammates, he's already given a few of them some of the highest compliments.
The Mavs held their Media Day on Monday, where Thompson lauded Luka Doncic's skills on the pick-and-roll.
After 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson decided it was time to move on over the summer. He switched teams and joined the Mavs via a sign-and-trade. With his experience, Dallas is viewed as one of the top teams going into the 2024-25 campaign.
However, it won't be a cakewalk as Thompson revealed that he has yet to learn the team's system. But he's confident that it'll be a smooth transition as he credits Doncic to be a significant part of how he'll blend in with the others.
"I'll have to adjust to maybe playing off such good [shot] creators, in Golden State it was [a] very motion-based offense," Thompson said. "Playing with Luka the past few days in the pick-and-roll has been like the best I’ve ever seen. It'll be fun to play with him in those sets because he draws so much attention, he gets open looks from the perimeter.
"I'll be there to knock them down and I think it will take a couple weeks just to get used to this new system... This preseason might be the most important one I've had in so many years. I can't wait to get going tomorrow and learn the system. I'm a hooper so I can adjust accordingly and I look forward to doing that."
Like Doncic, Thompson's former teammate Steph Curry can also grab the attention of the entire defense. However, the four-time champion thinks that the Slovenian star is better at drawing defenses in pick-and-roll situations.

Doncic talked about what Klay Thompson can bring to the team's offense
The Mavs offense has always been focused on Doncic. His ability to create shots and distribute the ball has always kept the defenses guessing. This season, the five-time All-Star has gained another star he can rely on to score points.
During their Media Day, Doncic talked highly about what Klay Thompson can bring to the team's offense.
"You basically can’t help off him. When me and [Kyrie] have the ball, you basically can’t help from Klay because if you leave him wide open he’s going to make it, so I think the spacing is going to be crucial for us," Doncic said.
Fans are excited to see the new Big 3 in Dallas. Given that Thompson is a career 41% shooter from downtown, defenses will have trouble containing all three stars.
