Andrew Wiggins' sister Angelica remembers late father on his birthday just days after his death
Mitchell Wiggins, father of Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins, died on Sept. 9 aged 64. While a cause of death was not given by the family, it was reported that Mitchell was dealing with a serious medical situation. Andrew missed 37 games during the 2022-23 season citing personal reasons. It was later reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania that he was tending to his father.
Angelica Wiggins, Andrew’s younger sister, took to her Instagram stories on Saturday to wish their late father a happy birthday. Mitchell Wiggins would have turned 65. She wrote:
“Happy birthday Daddy.”
Mitchell Wiggins played six seasons in the NBA and split time between the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bulls. The Rockets released a statement mourning his death:
“Today we mourn the passing of former Houston Rockets guard, Mitchell Wiggins. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.”
Andrew Wiggins’ father was originally drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 1983. However, he was traded to the Bulls for Sidney Lowe and a second-round pick. Mitchell spent six years in the NBA, playing 389 regular-season games. He had career averages of 10.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals.
Andrew Wiggins postponed China trip due to family emergency in August
The Golden State Warriors forward had an offseason tour scheduled to China in August. However, Andrew Wiggins’ manager, Richard Clarke, announced the postponement of the trip citing a family emergency, as per NBC Sports Bay Area. Clark said:
“Andrew won’t be able to come to China in the next couple of days due to a family emergency. These days have been really rough and tough on Andrew and the family. This trip really meant a lot to us.”
Not even a month later, it was announced that Mitchell Robinson had died. While the one-time NBA champion didn’t post anything about his father’s death from his personal social media accounts, he relayed a message via the Andrew Wiggins Enterprise. The caption read:
“RIP Mitchell Wiggins. A beloved father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, cousin and friend. May his soul rest in peace. His legacy and impact will live on forever!”
While Wiggins must still be reeling from the loss, he needs to switch his focus to his Warriors duty as the team treads into a new season without Klay Thomspon for the first time since 2011.
