Anthony Davis Trade: What led to the Brow forcing a move away from New Orleans Pelicans?
Anthony Davis was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2012 NBA draft, and the big man played for the franchise in his first seven years. However, in 2019, the number one pick decided it was time to move on from New Orleans.
Davis wanting to leave came as a shock to many, especially since the Pelicans were slowly asserting themselves in the league. Although they missed the playoffs in the 2018-19 season, they reached the Western Conference semifinals the previous year. Nonetheless, "The Brow" was convinced it was time to move on, and he forced his way out of the team.
When news of Davis' trade request broke, the All-Star attempted to explain the reason for his decision. In a 2019 interview, he highlighted that he had reached a point in his career where he needed to move on.
He said at the time:
"I feel like it's my time. I gave this city, organization, fans, everything I feel like I could. Don't know how long I can play this game, people's careers are short. I feel like it's my time to move on."
When asked if he plans to sit out the rest of the season if his trade request was not honored, he said:
"My intention is to play. ... Obviously, it's a tough situation but my intention is to still play. And when I'm able to play, I'm planning on suiting up."

With LeBron James being the No.1 player recruiter, the Lakers succeeded in landing AD. Although the Pelicans reportedly ignored initial calls from the LA Lakers, they eventually succumbed, and it was worth their while. In return for AD, the Pelicans received Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three picks.
The fans were understandably irate as he was their best chance of winning a championship. AD was a force on both ends of the floor for the Pelicans and led the league in blocks for three years.
Anthony Davis trade – A win-or-lose move for the Lakers
Davis' move to the Lakers was an instant success. Although the Lakers were trolled for trading all of their young prospects for one player, it bore fruit.
During his first campaign in purple and gold, he developed an intriguing chemistry with James. Together, they led the Lakers to the 2020 championship.
The last two years have been rough for AD and have resulted in a few fans demanding that Davis be traded. Injuries plagued the big man, and fans accused him of not playing with conviction when he was available.
Although Davis' reign with the Lakers has not resulted in as many championships as they would have liked, it is safe to say the Lakers have benefitted from his presence. Without AD, it would be tough to say if the Lakers would have won in 2020.
The Lakers had a ridiculously slow start to the 2022-23 season but are gradually starting to pick things up. After a 2-10 start, they have won eight of their last ten outings.
Anthony Davis has made a difference for the Lakers by putting together MVP numbers. Against the Washington Wizards on Sunday night, he registered a season-high 55 points and 17 rebounds.
