Anthony Edwards drops cryptic post ahead of Timberwolves 2024-25 season

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has caught the attention of netizens after making a cryptic post on his Instagram Stories. The two-time NBA All-Star posted an emoji of the "hand with fingers splayed emoji" with nothing else visible on the screen.

There was neither any text indicating what he meant nor any previous stories to give context to his post.

There was a previous story prior to Anthony Edwards' cryptic post but it was just an image promoting the new colorway of his AE1 signature shoe with Adidas, the 'Light Purple.'

He also posted more stories after this one but those are the NBA's promo for the upcoming 2024-25 season, a repost of Adidas' story of the latest AE1 colorway, and a link to the track 'Can't Go Back' by his brother bdifferent and OMB Peezy that links back to the song on Apple Music.

None of these gave any clue as to what he meant with the 'hand with fingers splayed' emoji.

Anthony Edwards is about to enter his fifth season in the league and this emoji can sometimes be used for the number five. Alternatively, Edwards wears the no. 5 jersey.

However, there is no telling if these are related to what the Timberwolves star actually meant unless he chooses to divulge that information.

NBA fans speculate on what Anthony Edwards' cryptic emoji means

Due to the cryptic nature of Anthony Edwards' post, some fans could not help but speculate on what it could mean. A couple of Edwards' stan accounts on X shared the cryptic posts and a few guesses on what it could mean were left in the comments.

Several people thought that it's a prediction on how many titles the Timberwolves are winning.

"How many chips we winning," one person said.
"He’s saying we’re winning 5 straight chips," another person suggested.
"5," another person commented.

Other people threw in other guesses, pointing out that it was the number five or simply commented on the post.

"Its his jersey number he’s saying its time to lock in," one person shared.
"Cryptic era I'm out," another said.
"Kawhi [Leonard]," one person commented.

Until Edwards comments on what it means, fans will continue to speculate. However, most of the guesses are related to the number five.

When Anthony Edwards was in college at Georgia, he wore number five. However, when he was drafted number one overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2020, he had to switch to number one.

That's because shooting guard Malik Beasley, who was on the Wolves roster at the time, was already wearing number five.

However, Beasley was traded to the Utah Jazz in the summer of 2022 for Rudy Gobert. Kyle Anderson ended up wearing five during the 2022-23 season but he and Edwards agreed to swap numbers since Anderson had previously already worn number one and was willing to change back.

This allowed Edwards to switch to number five for the 2023-24 season, which is the number that he wanted to wear all along.
