Australia and Spain locked horns in the 2024 Paris Olympics Men's Basketball opener on Saturday. The Boomers started Josh Giddey, Patty Mills, Dyson Daniels, Nick Kay and Jock Landale. Meanwhile, the Spaniards' first five on the floor were Lorenzo Brown, Xabi Lopez-Arostegui, Santi Aldama, Willy Hernangomez and Alex Abrines.
It seemed like a lopsided contest from the start with the Aussies taking a 12-point lead midway through the first quarter. They sustained the double-digit lead for a brief stretch.
Josh Giddey was the key architect of that promising start with 11 first-quarter points. Meanwhile, Jock Landale had eight points. Both shot 100% from the floor as Australia took a 31-21 lead entering the second quarter.
Spain cut the lead with a 6-0 run to begin the second quarter behind veteran Sergio Lull's back-to-back 3s. It seemed like Spain was inching closer to figuring out their woes, but the Australians quickly ended their hopes of an immediate turnaround, restoring the lead back up to 10 points.
Nevertheless, Spain kept fighting hard to cover some ground and found success with just under three minutes left for halftime. They cut the lead to five points behind a better defensive showing.
The half ended with Australia taking a 7-point lead (49-42) behind Josh Giddey's 15 points. Santi Aldama was Spain's best with 12 points in the opening half.
Spain carried over that momentum into the third quarter. Aldama got them back into the game, giving his country a 56-54 lead. However, that didn't last long. The Aussies were back in it in no time, restoring a nine-point advantage entering the final frame.
The reigning EuroBasket champs got as close as four points in the fourth quarter, but Josh Giddey and Co. didn't slip up by much, keeping the lead throughout the final 10 minutes. Shooting 48% from range, while winning on the boards propelled the Australians to a 92-80 win.
