"Big part of our rotation"- LeBron James views $32 million guard among key prospects for Lakers
LeBron James has high hopes for third-year guard Max Christie, who returned to the Lakers on a $32 million four-year deal this offseason. Christie was a restricted free agent this past offseason. Re-signing the 21-year-old was one of the team's top priorities after seeing his growth as a two-way prospect in his sophomore season last year.
James also expressed his satisfaction about the Lakers getting Christie back and reflected on what he brings to the table.
"Fantastic. I think Max will be a big part of our rotation," James said after Tuesday's traning camp opener (h/t SB Nation).
"He’s gotten better and better, and I’m happy we were able to bring him back this summer time. I look forward to a bright season from him."
Christie had an inconsistent role under former coach Darvin Ham. He was expected to be a big part of the rotation last year, but the lack of clarity on his development stunted his growth to some extent.
He played 26 more games than his rookie year and started seven times but averaged only 14.1 minutes.
However, that's likely changing this year. Even though Christie isn't starting this year, coach JJ Redick considers him a key rotation player. Having LeBron James' seal of approval helps the third-year guard's case to warrant more playing time.
The Lakers have also seemingly made their intentions clear with the lucrative $32 million contract they offered him in free agency.
LeBron James joined by son Bronny James and Max Christie for extra session
This year is a bit extra special for LeBron James, with his son Bronny James joining him on the Lakers after the franchise drafted him with the No. 55 pick. They became the first father-son duo to be in the NBA together and could soon create history when they share the court.
They seem to make the most of their time with extra sessions after practice. After Tuesday's opening day of training camp, the duo got shots up following practice alongside Max Christie.
After an underwhelming Summer League debut, Bronny's shot seemed good as he knocked down most of his 3-point attempts from the wing and corner. LeBron and Christie's rhythm looked good, too.
3-point shooting will play a key role in JJ Redick's system. The rookie HC has already mentioned that he wants LeBron James, Max Christie and others to lean on their ability from long range.
