Brian Scalabrine believes Zion Williamson’s unique playing style makes NBA more appealing for fans: “He’s just knocking guys left & right
Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans came into the 2022-23 season with the goal of contending in the Western Conference. After an impressive stretch, New Orleans is doing just that.
The Pelicans (22-12), who have won four straight games, are in first place in the West heading into Thursday night's games. One of the reasons for the Pelicans' recent success has been the sensational play of Williamson.
After missing last season with injuries, Williamson has hit the ground running this year. The 22-year-old forward has taken his game to another level, and New Orleans is looking as dangerous as ever.
On "SiriusXM NBA radio," analyst and former NBA veteran Brian Scalabrine recently praised Williamson, particularly for his physical playing style.
"He's just knocking guys over left and right," Scalabrine said. "I love his style of play. I think his style of play is good for the NBA right now."
Zion Williamson thriving in 2022-23 with New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans were a popular preseason pick to make noise this season. After an impressive second half of last season, even without Zion Williamson, New Orleans looked to have a great roster of depth and star power.
The key to unlocking the team's full potential was getting Zion Williamson back healthy. So far, everything has been going just as the franchise had hoped for. While Williamson, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft, has been impressive throughout the year, he's started to take his game to another level lately.
In his last 11 games, Zion is averaging 30.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. During that span, Williamson is shooting 64.1%, including 40.0% from 3-point range.
Zion has the rare combination of power and athleticism to be a dynamic star in the league. New Orleans has made it a point to put the ball in his hands more often during the 2022-23 season, especially with forward Brandon Ingram (toe injury) out since late November. It's paid off in a big way, as Williamson has become a playmaking threat who can impose damage around the basket as well.
New Orleans is starting to heat up at the perfect time, as numerous teams in the Western Conference have struggled. If Williamson and the Pelicans can keep their foot on the gas, they could be a difficult team to catch in the standings.
