"Bronny is the one I would cuff" - Patrick Beverley speaks out on getting bullied by LeBron James in lighthearted revelation
Former 12-year NBA veteran Patrick Beverley was asked about the prospects of giving LA Lakers rookie Bronny James a hard time if they were teammates. Beverley jokingly concurred, recounting how James' father, Lakers superstar forward LeBron James, did the same to him early in his career.
Bronny, the 2024 NBA draft's No. 55 pick, has split his rookie campaign between LA and the franchise's NBA G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. Nevertheless, given the two-way contract guard's father's status as an all-time great, his every move has been scrutinized.
During Wednesday's episode of "The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone," Beverley weighed in on whether he would pester the high-profile rookie on the bench. The defensive-minded guard harkened back to trying to make the then-LeBron-led Miami Heat ahead of the 2010-11 season.
According to Beverley, LeBron regularly messed with him, including making him run around to get his refreshments via vague requests until he grew frustrated. So, the three-time NBA All-Defensive team selectee comically noted that he would return the favor in a hypothetical scenario as Bronny's teammate.
"He's the one I would cuff. All because your father made me — Oh, the s**t Bron had me doing was wild," Beverley said. "I'm talking about, 'Pat, go get me a Gatorade.' 'Cool.' I come with a red. Everyone likes red. He said, 'No, I don't like that color.' I come back, 'Okay, cool.' Second option is blue. Everybody likes blue. 'No, I don't like blue, Pat, and I don't like it cold.'
"Me, as a rookie, I like to think I have a lot of sense. I go to the Gatorade thing; I get every Gatorade out. Cold and warm, every color. Get every water out, cold and warm. Big bucket; bring it to him. 'Motherf**ker, you pick now. We ain't gonna keep doing this. I've got s**t to do.'"
When asked to confirm that he "would have Bronny running," Beverley didn't hesitate.
"Oh, yeah, I ran with his dad. I'd cuff him like this," Beverley said. "'You're my young boy, I got you.'"
Patrick Beverley on playing with LeBron James on Lakers
While Patrick Beverley has never played with Bronny James, he spent the first half of the 2022-23 season on the Lakers alongside LeBron James. Despite allegedly being hassled by LeBron early in his career, Beverley commended the four-time MVP's team-first playstyle.
"I think he does a hell of a job in getting the best that he can get out of players," Beverley said on a September edition of his podcast. "I've noticed with playing with LeBron that you just have to play. You can't worry about LeBron. LeBron's gonna get his. Just play."
Thus, Patrick Beverley, who joined the Israeli Basketball Premier League's Hapoel Tel Aviv in July, doesn't appear to be holding a grudge against his ex-teammate.
