Darius Miles and Michael Davis indicted on capital murder charges by Tuscaloosa County grand jury: All you need to know
Former Alabama player Darius Miles was indicted on capital murder charges on Friday. This came after an investigation into the shooting death of Jamea Harris in January in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Miles' friend, Michael Davis, has also been charged.
Davis was allegedly the shooter. Miles, who played six games for Alabama this season, allegedly provided the gun. Alabama removed Miles from the team on Jan. 15.
This incident was highlighted due to the fact that Alabama freshman forward Brandon Miller, who is a top NBA draft prospect, got involved. Miller transported the firearm that was used in the crime. Miller's attorney, Jim Standridge, contends that Miller was unaware that the gun used in the murder, which was owned by Miles, was in the backseat of his car.
Standridge and the police have confirmed that Miller has cooperated with the investigation.
Miles' lawyer, Mary Turner, released a statement regarding the charges against the 21-year-old.
"While we are not surprised by the indictment based on the reality that a person accused of a crime is not allowed to present any evidence to the grand jury, we are nonetheless disappointed that the Government presented this case to the grand jury as capital murder considering the evidence uncovered during our investigation and the obvious weaknesses in the Government's case brought to light during the preliminary hearing," Turner said in a statement.
Taking a look at Darius Miles' college career
The 2022-23 campaign is the third season of Darius Miles' college career with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Looking at his stats, he isn't the type of player that would turn a franchise or a team around. He's a solid role player, capable of spreading the defense with his outside shooting.
In his freshman season, Miles only averaged 2.2 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.2 assists. The 6'6" forward shot 41.4% from the field and 35% from the three-point area. Averaging only four minutes a game, it was obvious that he wouldn't put up monster numbers across the boards.
However, he followed it up with an impressive sophomore season where he increased his production offensively. Miles averaged 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists in the span of 30 games. From four minutes into his first year, he saw more playing time on the court and averaged 17.2 minutes during his second season.
In his most recent season, his numbers went down tremendously. Miles only averaged 1.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists. He also shot 33% both from the field and the three-point area.
