Denver Nuggets in pursuit of blockbuster Zach LaVine trade, Lakers’ prime target and ex-NBA champ: Report
After being reported to have little to no trade value, Zach LaVine is now linked with the Denver Nuggets. The West Conference outfit is looking to add a quality wing and juice up its offense. The Chicago Bulls are in the middle of a strong season for the rebuilding side, showing what he is capable of if he is healthy.
LaVine is averaging 21.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists this season, shooting 50.1% from the field and 42.8% of his three-point attempts. Earlier, the Nuggets were named as a side reportedly interested in his services. According to The Athletic's Sam Amick and Tony Jones, Denver has a “significant” level of focus on the 2x All-Star ahead of the NBA trade deadline.
Their take noted that any trade involving LaVine would most likely see the Nuggets required to trade Michael Porter Jr. which might be a reason for the team to think twice. The advantage with Zach LaVine in the fold would be reducing the offensive load of Nikola Jokic, and he does come in as a complete scorer than Porter Jr.
Other key names on the Nuggets radar included Jordan Poole and Jonas Valančiūnas (Washington Wizards), Jordan Clarkson (Utah Jazz), De'Andre Hunter (Atlanta Hawks), and Cam Johnson (Brooklyn Nets).
NBA analyst lists likely suitors for Zach LaVine amid trade buzz
The Athletic's Sam Vecnie earlier listed the Nuggets as one of the potential suitors for Zach LaVine along with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, and the Miami Heat. The 29-year-old has been a trade rumor staple for the last two seasons, and per Brian Windhorst had no interested parties earlier this month.
The biggest issue for a LaVine move is the finances that come with him. He is set to make $43 million this year and is on the books for two more years, tallying $95 million.
Vecnie also noted the strengths and weaknesses ahead of a potential trade. The pros included his elite catch-and-shoot, making him a lethal threat. He has been a reliable three-point shooter and will be the difference-maker for teams looking to make the playoffs. His cons though are decision-making and is an average defender despite putting efforts on that front.
Previously, it was the LA Lakers, Zach LaVine's hometown team who were linked with the wing, but the trail since has gone cold. While he addresses one of the biggest needs — a wing who can take the load off LeBron James offensively and manufacture his shots. But only time will tell if the Lakers are surprise contenders for a potential trade.
