Devin Booker says the color of his skin led to perceptions about him coming into the league: “I had a light skinned reputation and I had to change that”

Things can get heated during games, and Devin Booker does not shy away from that. He recently said that he is actively trying to change a reputation about him.

Booker has jawed off with several players since coming into the league. He once had a situation with the Toronto Raptors mascot while taking free throws.

There has always been a misconception that dark-skinned players are tougher and more physical. Booker explained that he plays how he does because of his skin color.

After a comfortable win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Booker spoke about his mentality during games. When asked if it was his role to set the tone and inspire everyone to play hard, he said:

"I try to. I had a light skinned reputation coming into the league so I had to change that. I just do everything aggressively, and I try not to 'NBA too cool guy.' I'm not scared to get dirty."

Against the Timberwolves, Booker was given a technical for trash-talking the Timberwolves. Apparently, it was a big game for the Suns and the win was crucial.

Coming into the season, the Phoenix Suns were not considered championship favorites following their collapse against the Dallas Mavericks last season. They blew a 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference semifinals and were eliminated after seven games.

The Suns have had incredible campaigns in the past two years. In 2021, they reached the NBA Finals but lost the series to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Nonetheless, the Suns are determined to prove themselves despite their internal problems and Booker is leading the charge. There was some level of discord between coach Monty Williams and Deandre Ayton.

The organization's majority shareholder, Robert Sarver, was also suspended by the NBA for racist and misogynistic behavior. Regardless, the Suns have risen above all off-court distractions.

With Booker leading the charge, averaging 27.5 points, the Suns are third in the West (8-3). Their next outing is against the 4-7 OKC Thunder.

Devin Booker's aggressiveness is reaping benefits for the team. The Suns are arguably the most balanced team in the league this early in the season.

The Suns have an offensive rating of 116.8, only behind the Boston Celtics. Defensively, they are also ranked second behind the team with the best record in the league, the Milwaukee Bucks.

It is worth noting that the Suns have achieved this without Chris Paul playing his best basketball. The veteran guard has struggled this season, shooting 36.8% from the field and is nursing a heel injury.
