Does Jimmy Butler have hair extensions? Looking back at Heat star's viral hairstyle from 2022
Jimmy Butler has been making headlines in the postseason for leading the eighth-seeded Miami Heat to the Eastern Conference finals. But before all of that, Butler went viral for his wacky hair extensions before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season.
Butler surprised a lot of people back in July when he uploaded a video of himself getting dreadlocks hair extensions. He had the hair during the entire summer from workouts until the Heat's media day prior to the start of the regular season.
That meant Butler's promotional material all throughout the season into the playoffs had him in dreadlocks. It was a hilarious stunt by the Heat star that got a lot of people talking back then.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst claimed in October that Jimmy Butler was trolling everyone by having dreadlocks. Windhorst explained that Butler did it on purpose just to make everyone laugh and react.
"There might not be a bigger troll in the NBA than Miami's Jimmy Butler," Windhorst said. "He knew these pictures would be used for the rest of the season in promotional materials."
However, Butler had a different explanation during the team's news conference before the season started.
"I don't have any extensions," Butler said. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm trying out a lot of new looks. Ya'll like my baby-face assassin look? It's kinda cute isn’t it?
"I really don’t know. I ain't even thought about it. I'm just messing with stuff to make the internet mad. That was my goal this summer, and it worked."
The internet did not get mad at Butler for his dreadlocks. In fact, it went viral and a lot of memes were made and enjoyed by people online. It also pops up once in a while on national television, getting a few chuckle here and there.
Here's a couple of promotional material from ESPN and the NBA with Butler in his dreadlocks:

A week after NBA media day, Jimmy Butler showed up to the Miami Heat's first preseason game without his dreadlocks. It was indeed extensions, which could have hampered his performance on the court.
Butler's personal hair stylist Jessica Dart revealed to The Ringer the real reason he got the extensions back in July. Dart explained that Butler was aiming to win the NBA Finals and wanted to have his promotional photo plastered everywhere when they actually do it.
"It was absolutely big for him," Dart said. "That was the end of our ride with the dreads."
