Drake superfan Trae Young shows love to Lil Wayne amid Super Bowl controversy
Like many of his fellow stars in the NBA, Trae Young is a big rap and hip-hop fan. Earlier this week, the All-Star guard was listening to one of the genre's biggest artists after allegedly being snubbed for a major opportunity.
Over the weekend, it was announced that Kendrick Lamar will be performing the halftime show at this year's Super Bowl. Seeing that the event will take place in his hometown of New Orleans, Lousiana, fans argued that Lil Wayne was snubbed from getting the nod.
Based on his recent social media activity, Young seems to feel that Lil Wayne should have been chosen for this year's halftime show, too. The Atlanta Hawks star made a post on X (formerly Twitter) stating that he has been listening to the record-selling artist on repeat.
It's also worth mentioning that Young is a big fan of Drake, who has close ties to Lil Wayne dating back to the start of his career. The Canada-based artist is also fresh off a public feud with this year's halftime performer.
While many fans have argued that Lil Wayne was the ideal choice, others have debunked him being snubbed. Looking back through history, it's rare for the halftime show performer to play in their hometown. Ironically, one of the few to do so was Kendrick Lamar in 2022.
Young is gearing up for his seventh season with the Hawks. The 2018 No. 5 pick received his third All-Star nomination last year after posting averages of 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 10.8 assists (career high).
Trae Young gives bold take regarding his height
Since entering the NBA, Trae Young has proved to be one of the league's most dynamic offensive players. During an interview on the "Million Dollars Worth of Game" podcast, he gave a bold take regarding his talents if one thing were changed about him.
While Young is an elite scorer and playmaker on offense, he leaves a lot to be desired on the other end. Most of this stems from the fact that he's 6-foot-1, and opposing teams constantly hunt matchups with him.
Young said on the podcast that if he were 6-foot-8, he'd be one of the greatest players ever.
"If I was 6'8" I feel like I would be the best player to ever play this game," Young said. "Just cause of my mentality and the way I play."
Obviously, this will always be a "what if" for Young, but it is interesting to think about. As an undersized guard, he is a one-man offense with his ability to score and facilitate at a high level. If he maintained this skill set in a bigger body, he'd certainly be one of the top talents in the game.
