Exclusive: Walt Williams quips on Phoenix Suns roster strength after Kevin Durant trade: "You could put me in [the lineup] and we could get this!"
Following the Kevin Durant trade, the NBA has its newest superteam. After reports that the Brooklyn Nets were not going to move the former MVP, he was ultamitley dealt to the Phoenix Suns. This move came just days after Kyrie Irving requested a trade and was moved to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Kevin Durant trade depleated the Phoenix Suns of multiple assets, but they've managed to keep most of their core in tact. Brooklyn's return package was centered around Mikal Bridges and four unprotected first-round picks. Leaving Durant to join forces with Chris Paul, Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton.
During a recent episode of Sportskeeda's "Ball Father" podcast, former NBA player Walt Williams spoke to host Reggie Roberts about the new-look Suns. While some question if they have the depth to get a title, Williams feels he could enter their lineup and they'd be able to get the job done.
"Adding that dude KD to the mix right there is just unbelieveable. When you talk about CP3, Devin Booker, Ayton, KD, you could put me in there at the small forward and we can go get this thing. We might have a good shot at this thing."
Williams, 52, was a 6-foot-8 forward who was drafted seventh overall back in 1992. He played 11 NBA seasons and finished his career with averages of 11.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
The Kevin Durant trade started the clock for the Phoenix Suns
Before the Kevin Durant trade, the Phoenix Suns were possibly a team that could make a run at the NBA title. Now, expectations have gone through the roof. For multiple reasons, this year is now seen as championship or bust.
The biggest thing the Kevin Durant trade did was start the clock for this Phoenix Suns' core. Chris Paul is already 37-years-old and KD is 34 with an extensive injury history. There is no telling how much longer the two Hall of Fame talents have left, leaving Phoenix with an extremely tight window.
After surrending two good young players and countless draft picks, the Suns are all in on winning a title right now. They mortaged their future to bring in KD as the final piece for them. Alongside Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul, they have all the firepower they need to go and get the job done.
The Suns weren't the only team to make upgrades at the deadline. Multiple teams in the Western Conference stocked up for the playoff push. Even with the addition of KD, Phoenix is going to have their work cut out as they pursue a championship.
