"Face of the franchise" - Brian Windhorst predicts LeBron James will become a co-owner of expansion team

After signing a new contract with the LA Lakers, many speculate how long LeBron James' career will continue. One insider cited an outside factor that could lead to LeBron's eventual retirement.

Over the few years, LeBron has laid out his goals in the NBA. One is playing alongside his son, which is now a reality after the Lakers drafted his eldest son, Bronny James. Moreover, the 20-time All-Star has been adamant about owning an expansion team in Las Vegas.

On ESPN's "First Take," Brian Windhorst laid out a possible career timeline for LeBron James. He thinks the league expanding would have a direct impact on when he decides to hang it up.

"He wants to be the owner of the coming expansion team in Las Vegas," Windhorst said. "It'll probably be at the earliest two years from now. And that's what I think LeBron will be focused on.
"He wants to join up with partners to become the face of the franchise in Las Vegas."

At the age of 39, the Lakers star was still one of the top stars in the league. Across 71 games, he averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists. On Wednesday, he agreed a two-year extension worth $104 million to remain in LA.

LeBron James speaks on owning NBA expansion team in Las Vegas

LeBron James first started talking about his desire to own an NBA franchise in Las Vegas about a year ago. Leading up to last season, he shared his thoughts on why it would be a successful venture.

When asked about the subject, LeBron James touched on how Vegas has been a hot spot for basketball in the past. The league draws big crowds every year for Summer League, and USA basketball holds their scrimmages there.

LeBron added that he hopes to be a part of the expansion when the time comes.

"Sports is here," LeBron said. "I think adding an NBA franchise here is an attraction."
"I think it's only a matter of time. I hope I'm part of that time."

When it comes to the city of Las Vegas, they've been very welcoming to the basketball franchise they have. The Las Vegas Aces have been one of the top teams in the WNBA and broke an attendance record that stood for nearly 25 years.

As Brian Windhorst said, the league is still some time away from expansion, but Vegas has been among the most common cities brought up in reporting on the topic.
