Fans chip in witty reactions as Giannis Antetokounmpo credits peaches and bananas: “A peach and a banana and you too could be MVP”, “Your new spokesman for the banana and peach industries”
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is known to be a problem for defenses on the court. When asked about the secret behind his success, the Greek Freak had an interesting answer that caught fans off guard.
During a news conference, Antetokounmpo was asked what he attributes for his strong start to the season. The Bucks (7-0) are the only unbeaten NBA team and sit atop the Eastern Conference. The two-time MVP gave credit to his love of fruits.
"I've been eating a lot of fruits before the game. I'm a big routine guy," Antetokounmpo said. "A peach before the game, it gives me a lot of energy. It makes me feel good. After my pregame shooting, I eat a banana.
"So I eat the peach and then a banana, and I think it allows me to play better."
It's unclear whether Antetokounmpo was serious with his answer, as he was constantly trying to hide his smile. The 6-foot-11 power forward is known to be a fan of comedy and has told jokes to the media many times. Regardless, the fruits that he's been eating have contributed a ton this season.
Fans, on the other hand, had various reactions to Antetokounmpo's answer. Here are some of the best reactions:
Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks will look to stay undefeated as they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves (4-4) on Friday on ESPN.
Giannis Antetokounmpo could win his third MVP award this season
Ja Morant, Devin Booker and Luka Doncic. These are some of the players that experts have chosen to win the MVP award this season. But most seem to have forgotten about Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. So far, the Bucks have stayed unbeaten even without their second star, Khris Middleton.
Entering his 10th season, Antetokounmpo isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Through seven games, he's averaging 33.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists. He averaged 29.9 ppg last season and 29.5 ppg in 2019-20, when he won his second straight MVP award.
His numbers are incredible on their own. The former 15th overall pick is averaging more points this season than when he first won the MVP award (27.7 ppg in 2018-19). It's also weirdly familiar that the Bucks had a similar seven-game win streak to start the season when Giannis first won the award.
However, this year's MVP race won't be easy. With the amount of talent the league has this season, there will be valid arguments for many candidates. It's still the first leg of the long NBA grind, so it's too early to decide if Giannis Antetokounmpo is the clear winner. But he does have a huge shot.
The Bucks could get better as time goes on. They still don't have Middleton, who's recovering from a wrist surgery in the summer. Milwaukee could still remain at the top of the Eastern Conference once they get the three-time All-Star back.
