Reporter apologized for comments about Mac McClung's dunk contest involvement
Mac McClung single-handedly restored the interest of the audience with his impressive dunks last week. People were tired of seeing failed attempts, and their interest in the event wasn't like before. However, the league's decision to let McClung join the contest proved to be a smart choice.
He won the competition, joining a short list of participants who aren't of Africa American descent. Due to this, ESPN's Jesse Washington tweeted that McClung's race is the reason why he was able to participate.
"Mac is a nice kid and an outstanding dunker but the reason he’s in the dunk contest is that he’s white. i ain’t mad at Mac for participating. i’m mad at the NBA for refusing to understand that the contest has to totally change, or disappear," Washington tweeted.
Fans weren't happy with the comments, and Washington apologized in an article:
"Yo, Mac McClung: I was wrong, kid. You belonged in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. You rose to the moment and elevated the event from irrelevant to entertaining, and I apologize for saying that you were chosen to compete because you’re white.
"Don’t get me wrong: Skin color did play a role in McClung’s opportunity. But based on his talent and performance, McClung deserved his spot – and his presence sends a message to people who question whether Black people deserve what we have earned."
