Former NBA champion rallies behind Ben Simmons amidst struggles for form
Former NBA player Matt Barnes recently offered some support to Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons. As the Nets guard works towards being healthy and available, Barnes suggested that critics should be hesitant before counting out Simmons.
It goes without saying at this point that Simmons has been the object of ridicule for a large part of the last two seasons. After a controversial parting with the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons found himself on the receiving end of some harsh criticism even with the Nets.
Having missed almost two years of action due to injuries and personal issues, Simmons came into the 2022-23 season with a lot to prove. However, the process towards proving that point has been rocky to say the least.
The 26-year old hasn't been producing on the level that he was expected to. On top of the task of getting used to the pace of the NBA, Simmons is still battling his knee and back injuries.
Given his current form and tribulations, former NBA player Matt Barnes offered some support for the young Nets guard. In addition to his support, Barnes also suggested that the media and critics should be wary of their approach towards Simmons:
"I think Ben Simmons is hurt. Ben Simmons is getting his knee drained constantly. And if you're an athlete, you know how tough that process is and how painful it is to have to have your knee drained."
He continued:
"So I just feel like he's not healthy yet. I think after taking time off, you know, it's going to take a while for him to get back from his back and now his knee is acting up."
Barnes went on to say:
"But I think when Ben Simmons is healthy, he can definitely help that team. And I feel like overall that team has kind of really come together and rallied behind all the suff that Kyrie is kind of going through."
He concluded by adding:
"I know they're happy to have him back in the locker room and focused on basketball. And I think if Ben Simmons can get healthy, he can be a key contributor to that team."
While Barnes highlighted aspects of Simmons' return to form, the Nets guard has been rather impressive as of late. Emerging as a valuable contributor to the team, Simmons has displayed his value as a vital element in Brooklyn's success.
Ben Simmons anchors Brooklyn's defense
When the Brooklyn Nets acquired Simmons via trade, the Nets laid out their expectations of the star quite clearly. In a team that featured offensive firepower led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Simmons didn't have to be a force on the offensive end. His task instead was to playmake and defend.
While fans didn't get to see the 26-year old in action until the 2022-23 season, Simmons has certainly ensured made his presence known.
