Gabrielle Union shares Kaavia James' custom cake and guests dance moves at Barbie-themed birthday bash
Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union celebrated their daughter Kaavia James' sixth birthday on Sunday with a Barbie-themed party. It was attended by family and friends, who danced during the event. Union also shared her little princess' cake for her special day.
In a series of Instagram stories, Union shared snaps and reels from Kaavia's birthday party at their home in California. The family moved there from Florida in 2023 due to the Sunshine State's laws against LGBTQ. Wade's daughter Zaya is a transgender girl.
Kaavia's cake featured her silhouette and a big bow at the top. It also has her name spelled out using the Barbie font. The guests were dancing to Dua Lipa's "Dance The Night" from the "Barbie" movie. Wade and Union even had their custom toy box with Kaavia.
Gabrielle Union opens up about being a mother
Gabrielle Union began dating Dwyane Wade in 2008, when he was at the height of his career with the Miami Heat. They broke up in 2013, with Wade conceiving a child with Aja Metoyer. They reconciled and eventually got married a year later, becoming a stepmother to Wade's three children.
Union and Wade welcomed their daughter Kaavia James in 2018 via surrogate. Speaking to ABC News, the actress opened up about becoming a mother at a late age.
"It's changed my life in so many wonderous ways that it does make me wish I had done it earlier just so I have even more time with Kaav, I have even more time as a mom," Union said. "But for me, I became a mom at the right time because I was healed and I had committed to healing eternally, so I didn't pass all that generational trauma onto Kaav. I wasn't in a place to even take care of myself [before], much less our little miracle, so for me it's absolutely worth it."
Is Kaavia James named after LeBron James?
Many fans assumed that Kaavia's middle name was a tribute by Dwyane Wade to his friend and teammate LeBron James. However, that's not the case, and Gabrielle Union explained that it came from his godfather, James Glass.
"We wanted my family represented in her name. My godfather is my Uncle James Glass. She is named after him. And then Union…thats…ya know…me," Union wrote, according to Essence.
Dwyane Wade and LeBron James teamed for four seasons in Miami, winning two NBA championships together. They also played together in Cleveland during the 2017-18 season. He was there for half a season before returning to the Heat.
