Giannis Antetokounmpo in awe of Victor Wembanyama: “He can block shots like Rudy but shoot like KD”
Giannis Antetokounmpo knows a problem when he sees one. Like many NBA superstars who have seen Victor Wembanyama play, “The Greek Freak” is already gearing up for the upcoming French phenom.
On Serge Ibaka’s “How Hungry Are You?” show, Antetokounmpo laid out what the NBA could be facing starting the 2023-24 season:
“My friend [Ibaka], you will be in the league when this kid comes, get ready. Because if you’re not ready, this kid is gonna be a problem, a big problem. I’ve never seen this before in my life.
“I saw him up close. He was on the same team with my brother, Kostas. He’s taller than Rudy Gobert, but he can block shots like Rudy but shoot like KD [Kevin Durant].
“Whew! Bro. Bro. Crazy. Crazy. He has a good attitude. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be really good.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo is just the latest to admit in disbelief what Victor Wembanyama has been showing in the last couple of months. When the projected No. 1 pick of the 2023 NBA Draft played in Las Vegas, LeBron James and Steph Curry were just as impressed.
The LA Lakers superstar did not just call Wembanyama a problem or a unicorn, but an alien, which no one has ever seen before. Curry, on the other hand, called the Metropolitans 92 superstar a cheat code when centers want to play point guard.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s evaluation of Wembanyama has a foundation in his earlier NBA career. While Antetokounmpo struggled early on, the French prodigy could terrorize the league right off the bat.
Antetokounmpo’s game looked raw and even underdeveloped in his first two years in the NBA. Wembanyama, on the other hand, is already a more well-rounded and polished player than many in the league.
His coordination, versatility, fluidity and mobility for someone his size has left fans, analysts and executives with a stunned realization of what’s coming next season.
Several NBA scouts have also been effusive in their praise of the future NBA superstar. One has already dubbed him not just a team-changing player but a league-altering talent.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s unofficial title as the best player in the NBA could be threatened when Victor Wembanyama is drafted
Giannis Antetokounmpo will be at the peak of his physical tools and skills when Victor Wembanyama starts his NBA journey. “The Greek Freak” is right now considered by many to be the best in the league. He is a wrecking ball on both ends of the court that few have ever had a consistent answer for.
That enviable title and distinction may promptly go to the French youngster in just two years. The biggest roadblock to Wembanyama’s dominance will be a lack of experience and size, particularly against someone like Antetokounmpo or Joel Embiid.
Other than that, the player many evaluators have predicted as a generational talent could quickly ascend to the throne of the best in the NBA. Like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama already has a well-earned reputation as a hard worker and a fierce competitor.
Basketball fans are likely to be eager to see the first game between these two incredibly talented players.
