Giannis Antetokounmpo's wife Mariah explains why she doesn't speak Greek despite knowing it
Giannis Antetokounmpo has developed into a superstar in Milwaukee since moving from Greece 11 years ago. However, some fans don't know the incredible work his wife, Mariah Antetokounmpo, does with the community. She is raising money for the Milwaukee Diaper Mission. Mariah spoke with "Milwaukee With Kids" on Saturday about the project, living in Milwaukee and her life with Giannis.
Giannis was born in Athens to Nigerian immigrant parents. He spent his early years in Europe. He moved to the United States in 2013 after being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. The NBA superstar still has close ties to Greece and ensures his children are growing up learning Greek.
"He slowly speaks to them in Greek, and I speak to them in English. Anybody in our family who speaks Greek, speaks to them in Greek. They are picking up on," Mariah Antetokounmpo said.
However, Mariah Antetokounmpo isn't comfortable speaking Greek and explained why.
"I dabble in it. I understand a lot, I can hold a conversation. The only person I really talk to in Greece in Giannis. I get very self conscious, so kind of just avoid it; but I understand a lot," she added.
Mariah Antetokounmpo also shared that when the couple doesn't want others to understand what they are discussing, they sometimes switch to Greek.
Mariah Antetokounmpo is a fashion entrepreneur and started a clothing line named "Sincerely Mariah" in 2021. Giannis and Mariah married in 2024 in Greece and have three children together: Liam Charles, Maverick Shai and Eva Brooke.
The Antetokounmpo family continues to do great work to give back to Wisconsin. The family raises funds through the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation, founded in 2022, to give back to the community.
Mariah Antetokounmpo denies claim that Giannis' favorite restaurant is Wing Stop
During the interview with "Milwaukee With Kids," Mariah Antetokounmpo discussed several topics and spoke about the family's life in Milwaukee. She also shared insights into the family's eating habits and favorite restaurants.
When asked if Wing Stop was her husband's number one spot, Antetokounmpo said:
"Nah, I don't know if that is his favorite restaurant. He does like Wing Stop. I actually was craving it the other night."
Mariah Antetokounmpo also shared that her favorite restaurant in Milwaukee is The Edison. The NBA season starts on Oct. 22.
