Gilbert Arenas breaks down NBA players potentially cashing in billion-dollar deals after Jayson Tatum's monster contract
Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas shared his take on the current climate of the league's massive player contracts. This came after Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum signed a five-year, $314 million supermax contract extension. Arenas broke down the logic of it and which players could earn more money than Tatum.
After leading the team to the finals and winning the title, Boston didn't hesitate to secure their star. It officially became the highest contract for a player, surpassing his teammate and Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown.
Arenas had an interview with DJ Vlad and was asked if Tatum was deserving of the money.
"He's a max player. Max players are gonna get the max contracts," Arenas said. "There's stipulations that if you make two All-NBA teams, you can get the supermax. Whoever's on that position to get the supermax, their number's gonna be maxed out. He's been in the league long enough where this is his max.
"When Luka and Ant-Man are up, their max is gonna be about $360, $330, $340? So, it's just gonna go up every year. There's gonna be a new guy next year, a new guy after that the following year. That's just the way the contracts are."
The former player started talking about it at the 2:05 mark:
The three-time All-Star was asked if there's a chance people will get to witness $1 billion deals. Arenas said that it could happen soon.

What will Luka Doncic and Anthony Edwards' future NBA contracts potentially look like?
Arenas mentioned Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic as one of the players who could make more money than Tatum. Currently, Doncic is signed to the Mavs on a five-year, $215 million designated contract extension. According to the new CBA, the Slovenian star could rack up more money than what he has now.
Doncic has the chance to sign a five-year, $346 million deal in the future. That will come around before the 2026-27 season kicks in. It's also worth taking note that the All-Star guard has been sensational over past seasons, which makes him worthy of such an offer.
For Anthony Edwards, there's the belief that he could sign a deal that would earn him more than $300 million. In 2023, Edwards signed a five-year, $207 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. It could reportedly reach $260 million.
With the way he's shown improvement, there will be no surprise if he gets to ink a deal identical or worth more than Tatum's.
