Gilbert Arenas' son Alijah reflects on his reclassification

Gilbert Arenas and his ex-wife announced the reclassification of their eldest son, Alijah, on Thursday. According to the news, the former NBA star said his son was held back for a year after they enrolled him at New Village Leadership Academy, a school founded by actor Will Smith.

Now, they've assigned Alijah Arenas as a senior in high school, and he will soon play collegiate basketball. In an interview, posted on Instagram on Sunday, with Arenas, the star talked about his decision to reclassify.

“I feel like it’s just a better step for me in my process and my development,” Arenas said.

The young star said the decision was on him, and his parents respected what he decided on:

“They [the talks] were actually pretty recent. It was kinda like, ‘What do you wanna do?’ So, for me, I had to make a really big decision and I feel like this was the one. I feel like my family agrees and they are on board.”

When asked if he already had a school in mind, Arenas said:

“I don’t have a dream school… I haven’t discovered that yet, but really looking into it … I’ll narrow things down the further we get into 2025.”

Although he hadn't decided on which school he'd play for in college, the son of the former Washington Wizards star knows the kind of school he wants.

“I want to know what the program is doing to motivate to want to win," Alijah Arenas said. "If I find that, I enjoy that and really love that, then I’ll want to hop on board and see if we can win.”

As a junior, the younger Arenas has already received offers from schools like Texas, Arizona State, Xavier, Cal, Kansas, UCLA and Alabama.
