"Happy as hell he's gone": Draymond Green explains why Klay Thompson to the Mavericks was a good move

Draymond Green was happy that his former Golden State Warriors teammate Klay Thompson found a new home with the Dallas Mavericks this summer. The 34-year-old F/G was one of the big names in free agency and garnered ample interest from the LA Lakers and Dallas before picking the latter. On his part, Green believed that Thompson made the right choice, and he had his reasons for it.

Speaking on the Club 520 podcast, the veteran forward said he's "happy as hell": that Thompson was gone. He further added:

"The reason I’m happy he’s gone is because he wasn’t happy no more. As a brother, I only want what’s best for you, not what’s best for me, not what’s best for this team."

Thompson's trade negotiations with the Warriors reached a dead end as the four-time NBA champion sought a long-term contract with the Bay Area outfit. He later ended up inking a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Draymond Green and Steph Curry will now be left without a core member in Thompson, but the Warriors have already made splashes by adding sharpshooter Buddy Hield and have been linked to Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen.

Draymond Green has one request for the Warriors if he is traded

In the same episode of Jeff Teague’s Club 520 podcast, Draymond Green shared his request for Golden State if he were to ever be traded, specifically if they had plans on sending him to a subpar team.

“I pray to God if [the Warriors] ever feel the need to get rid of me… If they [are] going to send me to any non-winning organization, then send me to Detroit," Green said. "That's the crib... I much rather it be Detroit than Charlotte."

It makes sense for Green to play for the Pistons considering he is a Michigan native and played his college ball at Michigan State. The Pistons are on a rebuild this season, and should the Warriors indeed decide to pull off a Draymond Green trade, sending him to his hometown team would not be a bad idea.

With the Warriors trading one of their key, Klay Thompson, there's no guarantee about who will stay and who won't, given the harsh business nature of the NBA. Now, only time will tell if Draymond Green ends his career as a Warrior.
