"He was attacking my family, calling me dumb, saying personal sh*t" – Derrick Rose opens up on order of the events entailing his way out of Chicago
Derrick Rose recently spoke about a feud he had with a Chicago reporter that bothers him to this day. According to Rose, the reporter in question made nasty personal remarks about Rose and his family.
During a recent interview with Math Hoffa, Rose said:
"He was asking crazy questions, I could feel the vibe. I'm not looking at him but he was asking me crazy s**t every day. It's to the point other media people would laugh at him. They know it's about to be some crazy sh*t that's coming out hiof s mouth... He had to apologize. [He] wrote an article before he left the newspaper in Chicago and retired."
He added:
"He had to write that s**t out in a article so he could get it off his conscience. He was attacking my family. Calling me dumb. Like saying personal s**t bro. Journalists aren't supposed to be doing [that] in basketball ... He's attacking me and nobody's saying nothing."
Derrick Rose also spoke about a pivotal meeting with the Bulls' front office. He expressed his opinion about some of the moves the franchise had made. Rose believes this directly resulted in him being traded. The comments begin around the 7:30 mark.
Rose's time with the Chicago Bulls was a rollercoaster. He was selected first overall in the 2008 NBA draft. Rose captivated fans with an impressive rookie season. He averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 assists, and started in 80 of his 81 games. He won the Rookie of the Year award for the 2008-09 season.
Rose elevated his game to another level in his sophomore season. He improved his scoring and 3-point shooting. The Chicago native also earned his first All-Star selection. This instilled confidence in Rose and he boldly declared that he would win the MVP prior to the start of the 2010-11 season.
In somewhat prophetic fashion, Rose led the Bulls to the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls swept the championship favorite Miami Heat during the regular season. All the signs pointed to Derrick Rose and the Bulls being a dominant force for years to come.
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. Rose tore his ACL in the first round of the 2012 playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. He missed the entire 2012-13 season. His career was never the same after the injury.
He returned to action in the 2013-14 season. He injured his right meniscus after just 10 games in November 2013. The injury caused him to miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season. There was growing frustration among Bulls fans. Some were hopeful he would return to form. Others were calling for the team to trade him.
Derrick Rose went through mental pain getting traded from Bulls
When Derrick Rose found out he had been traded, he was in the middle of a sit-down interview for a documentary. As Rose spoke to the cameras, he was told there was a call for him. He immediately knew something was up. With cameras following close behind, Rose learned he had been traded to the New York Knicks.
Understandably emotional, Derrick Rose attempted to compose himself before returning to the interview. He broke down and cried. At the time, it seemed that the city of Chicago had turned on him.
The trade was detrimental to his career. After a mediocre season with the Knicks, Rose was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the Cavaliers, he suffered lingering ankle injuries that sidelined him for several months.
He appeared in just 16 games for the Cavaliers during the 2017-18 season. Rose was traded to the Utah Jazz in February 2018 and was immediately waived. This kickstarted an incredibly difficult period for Rose.
With no team interested in his services, Rose questioned whether it was the end of his career. Fortunately, former Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau signed Rose to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is where he experienced a career resurgence.
In his second season with the Timberwolves, Derrick Rose scored a career-high 50 points on October 31, 2018. As they say, the rest is history.
