"Honeymoon period is over" - NBA fans react as Cavaliers get knocked out of NBA Cup race by Hawks
The Cleveland Cavaliers were knocked out of the NBA Cup after their shock 117-101 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. It was the Cavs' second loss to the Hawks in as many games, with the first loss coming at the Cavs' home court.
The loss was more painful because it resulted in their elimination from the NBA Cup. Their early season form seems to have fizzled out as their offense let them down in a crucial matchup.
Fans were surprised by the Cavs' successive losses against the Hawks. One user on X sarcastically commented that their period of enjoyment was over after a strong start.
"Honeymoon period is over."
Some fans made fun of the Cavs.
"Spida ate way too much Turkey yesterday," a user wrote.
"Cavs said," another user joked.
Other fans were critical of the Cavs' performance.
"This is a trademark of Cavs teams in recent years. They play finesse ball. They have no choice. They're undersized and when the game gets physical, they simply can't hang. Still likely a playoff team, but one not destined to make a deep run due to physical limitations," a fan commented.
"Yall really convinced yourselves you’d shoot 55% from three for 82 games. 15 minutes is up back to the bottom you go," another fan wrote.
"They say beating a good team twice is hard, but yall aren’t a good team, so I am not surprised," a fan wrote.
"This is nothing to be proud of getting beat twice one at home and now at their home, a fan added.
Darius Garland was the best player for the Cavaliers as he had a game-high 29 points, three rebounds and five assists. Evan Mobley also came up big for the Cavs with a double-double of 24 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. But it wasn't enough to take them through.
Trae Young of the Hawks stepped up big and delivered with a double-double of his own, 21 points, 11 assists and three rebounds, inflicting the Cavaliers' third loss of the season.
What next for the Cleveland Cavaliers?
The Cleveland Cavaliers will be hoping to recover from their first successive loss of the season. However, a tough task awaits in the form of the defending champions, the Boston Celtics.
The Cavs won't be too excited about this fixture as the Celtics were the team that handed their first season loss. The game will take place at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on December 1, 2024, at 6 PM EST (3 PM PT).
