How many triple-doubles does Russell Westbrook have as of October 2022? Looking at his unique records, including his most-recent triple double
Russell Westbrook has been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism since joining the LA Lakers last season. However, that wasn't always the case. When his career ends, he will still be in the history books for multiple impressive feats.
At his peak, the All-Star guard was known for his ability to fill up the box score. This led to Westbrook securing a vast number of triple-doubles. He currently holds the record for most all-time with 194. Before the Lakers guard, the title of "Mr. Triple Double" was held by Milwaukee Bucks legend Oscar Robertson.
While triple-doubles have become a more common feat, the Lakers guard is head and shoulders above the pack. The only current player close to surpassing him is his teammate LeBron James, who has 105. After that, the next closest is Nikola Jokic with 78.
Russell Westbrook is the true king of the triple-double
The records just don't stop with total triple-doubles. Throughout history, Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook are the only players to average a triple-double across an entire season.
Some might question how the All-Star guard was able to do this, but the numbers don't lie. While Roberston only pulled off this impressive feat once, Westbrook did it on four separate occasions. The most recent occassion was the 2020-21 season, when he averaged 22.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 11.7 assists.
A player has never come along and consistently filled the stat sheet like this before, and it might not ever happen again.
When was the last time Russ recorded a triple-double?
From 2016 to 2021, the former MVP posted triple-doubles almost on a nightly basis. However, at this stage of his career, it's become a far more rare occurrence.
Although Russ has been labeled a bad fit for the LA Lakers, he has still managed to turn back the clock at times. His more recent triple-double came on March 18, 2022. The two-time scoring champ went for 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a five-point win over the Toronto Raptors. It was one of the 10 triple-doubles he recorded that season.
Will Russ record a triple-double this season?
At 33 years old, Russell Westbrook is past the prime of his career. Looking at how his production continues to decline, it seems doubtful he will post a triple-double this season.
The best chance of doing so would be if he eventually gets traded to a less competitive team. Playing next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis in LA, the days of "Mr. Triple Double" might be over.
