"I'd rather go with the champs" - Kevin Durant justifies picking Chiefs over Bills as Suns NFL comparison
Kevin Durant sees his Phoenix Suns as being more like the Kansas City Chiefs than the Buffalo Bills. Durant recently appeared in the "Up & Adams" with host Kay Adams, where the NBA star was asked which NFL team best compares to the Suns. Without hesitation, Durant chose the Chiefs.
Durant said Phoenix shares the same championship mentality Kansas City has. Because of this, the Suns star believes the Chiefs comparison is fitting, stating:
"Imma say the [Kansas City] Chiefs, 'cause we bring that championship mentality everyday, baby."
Adams then followed up by suggesting the Suns might be more like the Bills than the Chiefs. Kevin Durant quickly turned down the idea and explained why he prefers to align with Kansas City.
He said that while he has yet to win the championship for the Suns, maintaining a belief like the Chiefs' will help them achieve their goal.
"I don't want to be one of those guys [Buffalo Bills]," Durant said. "So I'd rather go with the champs and just take on that mentality."
Is Kevin Durant's Suns more like the Chiefs or Bills?
While some might argue that comparing the Suns to the Bills is more accurate, Durant’s commitment to a winning mindset is understandable. Before joining Phoenix, Durant already established himself as a champion, winning multiple titles with the Golden State Warriors.
Given Durant's championship experience, he'd like to keep that mentality alive despite falling short on several occasions. The last time the Suns were in the NBA Finals was back in 2021 when KD had yet to join the team.
It makes a lot of sense to compare the Suns to the Bills. Buffalo made four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1991 to 1994, but they lost all four matchups and were never able to bounce back up since.
The Suns are in a similar situation. Throughout the franchise's history, Phoenix has made three NBA Finals appearances — in 1976, 1993 and 2021 — but lost each time.
If Kevin Durant manages to take the Suns to the NBA Finals and win at least one title during his tenure with the team, only then will Phoenix be more like Kansas City.
