"I know what I'm worth": Stephen A. Smith defiantly puts $100 million, 5-year rumored deal in perspective
Over the past decade, Stephen A. Smith has cemented himself as arguably the top host in sports talk television. Fully aware of the success he's had at ESPN, the longtime NBA reporter and analyst did not hold back when talking about his contract negotiations.
While speaking with CNN's Chris Wallace, it was brought up that his contract is rumored to end in 2025. When asked about wanting a $100 million deal from ESPN, Smith stood firm on what level of value he brings to the network.
“I would ask, respectfully, pay attention to the industry, see what people are getting paid," Smith said. "See how much money they’re making and what they’re bringing to the table. Dak Prescott just signed a contract for $240 million. He’s making $60 million a year.
"I’ve been No. 1 for 12 years. I’m sorry, in our respective industries I win, and I’m fully aware of what I’m worth, and I will never apologize to that for anybody.”
Despite having numerous co-hosts over the years, Stephen A. Smith has kept "First Take" atop the ratings. These days, he is flanked by Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe. Together, they draw in millions of viewers daily, discussing all the major topics across the sports world.
Smith works tirelessly to produce exciting content for ESPN on and off the air. Because of this, he has no problem trying to command top dollar from the network.
Stephen A. Smith goes berzerk when talking about Pete Rose
Part of what makes Stephen A. Smith such a draw on television is the passion he brings to sports debates. Whether it's comical or over-the-top, people tune in daily to see his theatrics in front of the camera.
One of Smith's latest stunts on "First Take" happened earlier this week. Following the tragic news of Pete Rose's death, he sounded off on Major League Baseball for how it has handled him over the years. During his playing days, Rose was one of the greatest hitters ever. However, he ended up getting banned after being caught in a betting scandal.
While speaking about Rose, Stephen A. Smith called out the MLB for never lifting his ban. He also put the league on the spot and said it better honor him properly following his death.
Rose spent nearly 25 years in the MLB, playing primarily for the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies. He was a 17-time All-Star, a three-time World Series champion and won the batting title on three separate occasions. Rose has the most hits among any player in baseball history (4,256) but was never elected into the Hall of Fame due to his off-field scandal.
