Is Bronny James playing tonight against Houston Rockets? Closer look at Lakers rookie's status for 2024 NBA Summer League gameĀ

All eyes will be on Bronny James' status for the LA Lakers 2024 Las Vegas Summer League opener against the Houston Rockets. LA's 55th pick is expected to suit up for the contest at the time of writing. Bronny appeared in the California Classic Summer League games twice.

Friday's game against the Rockets would be his Las Vegas Summer League debut. Much has been made of Bronny's up-and-down run in his two outings. He struggled on both ends in his debut against the Sacramento Kings, where he finished with four points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal, shooting 2 of 9, including 0 for 3 from range and 0 for 2 from the free throw line.

Bronny had three points in 29 minutes. He was focused on the defensive end as he took just three shots. He added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks, showing flashes of what he could bring together as a point-of-attack defender.

With a couple of games under his belt, Bronny James' feel for the Summer League atmosphere could help him improve his production against the Rockets. It's a bit different compared to the regular season or G League basketball, with constant high tempo and rushed possessions, which may not fit Bronny's game.

Bronny James is on track in his development with LA Lakers

Bronny James is not entirely ready to get on an NBA team and contribute enough to play next to his father, LeBron James. There's still a lot he needs to work on, but the foundation seems to be there. Bronny has impressed with his defensive instincts and playing above his 6-foot-1 frame.

The Lakers also adjusted well with him in his second game, limiting his offensive involvement. After taking nine shots in his debut, Bronny attempted only three in his second outing. He was tasked with being their go-to perimeter defender and did a decent job.

LA's plan with LeBron's eldest son is to focus on his development through its system. He will reportedly get most of his playing time in the G League with the South Bay Lakers after potentially featuring in a limited role in the first couple of regular season games.
